Good Day!

I am a little late posting this morning-- I have been busy joining the CRF group and trying to find a food that is acceptable for diabetics and kidney kitties. The FF is TOO high in phosphorus and I need to find an alternative. Kitty is about the same, she didn't have much appetite last night or this morning, but when I returned from "food shopping" she had her head buried in her bowl! She is very dehydrated, even after daily fluids. I considered taking her to the vet school this morning, but elected to wait another day and see how she does. I don't want to let her go down too much, without seeking their advice. She is alert, grooming and loving--- as long as she is willing to fight, then I am with her! I keep looking for small improvements and I do think she is moving around better. Hopefully she will stabilize and the anemia meds will take effect. Her BGs are not terrible-- this morning amps was 327. I am only testing at preshot due to the anemia.

Chewy is still coasting! This morning amps 107 I think this is +201!

Did you find a food that is diabetic and kidney friendly? I was really surprised at the phosphorus content in the foods! It's like people food, if you go lower on one thing the values are jacked up for another thing. :sad:

Praying for you and Kitty, hoping you see some improvement, soon.
 
I am yet to find the "perfect" food for diabetic and kidney cats, but what I am convinced of is it is NOT Fancy Feast! Kitty has eaten FF all of her life and If she will not eat anything else, then she can continue to eat it--But, I am going to try alternatives. The Fancy Feast Classics all appear to be extremely High in Phosphorus. It appears there are some Friskies varieties and Wysong that are low phosphorus and low carbs. I have been shopping and have 11 different types/cans that all look better than the FF for her. Maybe she will like one of them--if things hold true to course, it will be that last one I try! She is on Phophorus binders, but I see no reason to feed more phosphorus if unnecessary.
 
Good luck with the new foods to try - I hope she finds a yummy one! Well, of course it won't be one of the first few you try...that'd be too easy ;-) It just looks to me like it'd be in the best interest of "X" company to lower the phosphorous values since I've read that many cats have kidney problems as they age. Then, the older cats could continue to eat their food and they'd continue to get our money. But, they don't ask for my opinion...
 
I found a few foods that actually fit the protocal and believe it or not....the first one, she ate! She seems to be having a pretty good day, all things considered. I left food with her and went outside to do some yardwork and came back in and found an empty bowl! It doesn't take much these days to make me happy!

Her midshot preshot was even very good---275!

So, maybe today is just a short rally or maybe she feels better today--- either way, I'll take it!
 
Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets -- carbs 5 phosphorus 165! Shhhh, don't tell her it is in a large can and cost less than FF, she would quit eating it! The KD is only 75 in phosphorus, but that is not an option-- it is 29 percent carb. The FF I was feeding was 350 to 450 in phosphorus-- so, while the Friskies might not be ideal, it has to be a better option than the FF. I have some additional varieties and flavors to try also! I haven't bought the Wysong yet, I am waiting for the CRF group to advise me....no responses yet.
 
I've tried the Friskies Special Diet over and over again, mine don't like it much. There are other Special Diet flavors though.

That's why I didn't stick around in the CRF group, the response time.
 
The worse thing about the Special Diet is the Fat content-- terrible for Ptitis! So, if I could just find a food that was low carb (diabetes), low fat (ptitis) and low phosphorus (kidneys)-- I would have this whipped!!!

I do like the calorie content on the Special diet, 175 a can---that is an increase from most varieties and she can use the calories.

I am sure she won't like the special diet for long....it looked a little "stiff" and Dry!
 
She probably wouldn't mind if you cooked for her! :lol:

Paulo thought that was a good idea once, and would be thrilled to revert, if his Mama was only more domesticated! His favorite - Chicken breast tenderloins and California Vegetable Medley with some melon for desert. ROTTEN!!! :lol: This is why the pet food manufacturers make so much off of us!!!
 
Are you talking about Tanya's CRF group? I totally didn't get what was going on. Blonde...remember! :lol: I never did post over there, all I ever got was email...mind you I didn't take the time to go back & read all the instructions. It just seemed too technical for me.

I have been round & round about the food. My cats or me for that matter didn't like the Friskies Special Diet. It just looked gross to me. They drove me nuts...one would like something but the others didn't. The only thing they all eat is FF & it's just too much to try to give them all different food.

You are doing a great job with Kitty & Chewy!
 
Petsmart has a wide variety of flavors in the special diet. Long before Baxter was DX I fed him special diet knowing about the phorphus content. There's beef, ocean white fish ( Baxters favorite), salmon, turkey & giblets & I think a chicken flavor.

I hope Kitty will continue to do better. ;-)
