Good Morning--

Not much news on Kitty. The Vet did call this morning and said that they would repeat the chest Xrays, ultrasounds and blood work today. She is still in an oxygen cage and they said she seemed comfortable.

I told the vets yesterday that Kitty's insulin was dosed TID. When they called last night, the resident said they had decided to only give Kitty her insulin twice a day...."...that is how we do it!" I told them Good Luck and to get the IV drip out, that it would never work. Not to mention-- they thought 3 units twice a day would be okay. This morning in their report to me, they said her BG is extremely High....I said, "Really?!" I explained my dosing regiment for Kitty again......this time they said, "......hold on, let us get a pen!" So, I am hoping they take my advice and give her insulin as I instructed. The last thing she needs is the added complication of high BGs--- I know the tid will control her.

She ate well last night, but this morning they are waiting to feed her until after her tests. Kitty has always had a Cute personality, but she really doesn't like a lot of people other than me handling her. I could probably pull her eyes out---but, she doesn't want others touching her! She introduced herself to some of the students last night-- by slapping the fool out of them! I wonder if they still think she is cute?

They did confirm that she has some fluid in her lungs and they will give her a diuretic again today to try and clear it off. The really tricky thing with all of this, other than her age is ---with the heart, you need to remove fluids-- with the kidneys, you need to add fluids. I know her kidney values were elevated, but I really think the symptoms I have been witnessing have been her heart, not her kidneys. I never thought she should have been as lethargic as I was seeing her--- based on the anemia and the elevated kidney values alone. I know the sub qs I have been administering were not helping and probably made her situation worse.

My local vet has a call into the vet school and hopefully she will be able to find out more about the True prognosis--- though, I know none of this is good. I will give the vets every opportunity to help her as long as she is comfortable and alert. I am trying to be find some hope in this....but, it is hard.

Thanks for the support.

Re: Kitty 3/27 update.....

I can only imagine how hard this is for you right now
but try to take some comfort that at least she is smacking the fool out of some of them!
which also means she still has her fight..
hang in there, you are both in my thoughts and prayers all day and night

Re: Kitty 3/27 update.....

I am encouraged that she is slapping the fool out of people too.

Kim, have you mentioned the potassium level issue to them at all? The reason I ask is that my understanding is that potassium is all about muscle function. Too low or too high a level can cause problems with the heart (it's pretty much all muscle). Maybe they can so something to bring her level up that would benefit her heart?

Still sending thoughts and prayers to the Alley.

Carl

Re: Kitty 3/27 update....

They repeated Kitty's blood work and Xrays this afternoon. The vet informed me prior to the tests the severity of Kitty's heart failure. Yesterday, when they performed the cardiac Xray, they could not see her heart well due to the fluid in her chest cavity. They immediately did an echo and it revealed a thickened heart wall and turbulant blood flow in the chambers. The vet said that she might respond to the treatments and might not-- no guarantees. The vet also said that even with a positive response the outlook is not good. She encouraged me to leave Kitty in the ICU for a couple of days and let them attempt to stabilize her---I agreed. The vet said even with successful treatment, she might only live a couple of months.

This afternoon they called with her report. The lasix has cleared most of the fluids in Kitty's lungs and has NOT compromised her kidneys. In fact, some of the kidney values have improved. Her blood pressure was 250 on the dobbler overnight and 120 is normal. The vet was concerned if she would respond to the medication to bring it down--- one dose and her BP is Normal! Their intentions are to give the lasix again tonight and to keep her under oxygen. The vet said she was responding really well to the heart medicines. If all goes okay... they will remove the oxygen tomorrow and see how she does. They said even though it is a bad situation, that she had responded as well as possible. The best news in all of this is that the lasix is not affecting the kidney values. She is eating good and slapped a few more of them this afternoon!

So, what does this mean? I am not sure! Long term she is in a compromised situation, for now she is doing better.

Thanks for the prayers and positive vibes!

Oh thank goodness!

She is such a fighter! it just amazes me!
Hang in there and we will keep on praying!

Kim,
I haven't kept up with the boards, but I see where Kitty is having some issues.
I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
