Hello all,
I was hoping to pick your brains regarding my sister's new brother-sister kittens. She adopted them a week ago this past Saturday (6/20). They are approx. 12-13 weeks, found under a dumpster when they were about 4-5 weeks and have been in a foster home since then. We noticed that they had runny poop by Sunday (6/21). Thought it was stress of new home (even though they have it made here!) or more likely....diet change (we put them on FF Kitten - Turkey, but then switched to FF Chicken because the Kitten formula had milk and we thought that might be upsetting their tummies.) We added a little pumpkin & still no change.
On Tuesday (6/23), we took them into the vet w/ stool sample from boy kitty. The vet did a float test and found trace amounts of coccidia. They each received a dose of Marquis Equine Paste to fight the infection & put on 7 days of Albon.
By Friday (6/26), sister took them back in to vet's because stool was still runny and she thought she saw pink in the little girl's stool. She took a sample of the girl's stool and they did a smear test and found the coccidia was far worse...which stumped the vet. He said the Marquis Equine Paste should have knocked it out almost completely, but to find that it was worse was baffling. Here is what they received:
They each received another dose of Marquis Equine Paste;
Both received 1 Dexamethasone SQ (I believe this was for the poop pain);
Both are now on Clindrops (ZydaClin aka clindamycin hydrochloride liquid) twice daily for 7 days
(Teddy gets .5cc and Gracie gets .4cc by mouth).
She is texting me from the vet's office, right now (6/29) because they both have loose stool and now the vet tech is trying to tell my sister she needs to put them on Hill's dry food.
I did buy my sister some FortiFlora and it arrived on Saturday, but she hasn't used it yet. Didn't want to add anything else into the mix, yet.
Does anyone have experience with all of this? Currently, they are testing the poop and she will get back to me with results when they let her know, but in the meantime, I don't know what to tell her. From what I read about the Clindrops, they cause diarrhea, so I'm not sure why he would put them on that...but then again, most antibiotics have that side effect. As for dry food...I know how I feel about it, but with regards to kittens...should she consider giving them a little dry food and if so, which kind?
HELP...PLEASE!

This is one of those antibiotics that I have big signs in my notebook saying NO NO NO! My sister has the same sign in her kitty's notebook. She asked her vet about the side effects (blindness) and he said that he wasn't giving them a dose anywhere near the doses mentioned in those cases of blindness. I still don't like it. Makes me very nervous. Also, he did not want her change their food. No dry food necessary. He said the FortiFlora would be fine for them AFTER we get them feeling better.
