So, she really doesn't do much on .5 unit at night. Is the consensus that this could be due to her dropping so low so quick from her morning dose? Rebounding?
Same food, same dose, am and pm.

Cathy

My opinion is hard to tell. Sometimes cats react to lower numbers by being flat the next cycle. It could be that. I think we have too little data yet. The dose yesterday was good and I would stick with it this cycle.

We have cats that get used to the lower numbers and settle in quickly. And we have cats who seem to bounce each time. We will have to see what her pattern is.

Thanks, it's just funny because the vet basically told me when she was diagnosed that it would be okay, most cats just required special food and a shot twice a day-that not much would be different. ::sigh:: Can I have my old life and cat back please?

Cathy

I know. And you will be able to get her regulated, but it takes awhile. Re your vet - With high carb food and high doses, they do look regulated. The food keeps them high enough to give them high doses. And if you don't test at home, you don't see what is actually happening. But eventually their body wears out. It would be like an overweight diabetic human eating high carb food and taking increasing amounts of insulin to counteract that.

With the testing and the right diet, she can get regulated. And maybe even off insulin all together. Nobody will argue it is easy. But it is worth the tears and frustration.

It's early into the process. She is getting lovely blue numbers on a tiny dose of insulin. You both are doing great.

Thanks, the husband thinks I'm insane but knows to go along with me for his own good. Coming off insulin is a dream, but I do hope because she has had such a good response to the low carb food and requires so little insulin that it is a possibility. I hate being terrified that if I give her insulin, I could kill her. You've been very helpful and kind.

Cathy

OK, 289 at 1.8+ for a drop of 190 so far. She really reacts to this tiny am dose. Gonna feed her a snack and go, looks like I might want to consider feeding this snack at 1+ in the future since she just tanks immediately after the shot?

That sounds good.

It's all about data. The more data you get, the more you can look back and see patterns and trends. When did a snack do what? What's the average drop and when does it happen? When is the nadir or does it move? Sometimes it helps to think of the whole thing as data gathering.

Cathy -
I know how hard it is to do this. But for me, I think of it in the reverse direction. If I don't give him insulin, it would kill him. So despite my concerns, I've seen significant improvements in less than 2 months. It DOES get better. Just remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Patience!

You might be able to control the AM drop by doing some simple timing adjustments. If you were to test, then feed, and wait just a bit, maybe 30 minutes, before shooting. You'd still be dosing on the non-food number you got, but you'd be giving the food time to start boosting the number before the insulin kicks in. Giving the food a head start, so to speak. That many may the drop a bit later, and not as drastic. Just a thought...

Carl

Thanks ladies, Carl that sounds like a good idea to me. I will try that tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to be home and test to see what that does.

Alright, 182 at +6, thank you guys so much for telling me to give her a snack because I have no idea how low she got but I know she might have been really low otherwise (came down likely +300 points!). So I was not expecting this today, her starting today was higher than the 27th and she came down further than that day even with the snack (she was not given a snack on the 27th)! Hoping maybe she'll stay down for a little longer duration today. Is this level of sensitivity to the insulin commonly seen (is this something that will subside likely as she becomes used to it, or do cats normally stay pretty sensitive)? She wasn't being affected when on the carb food like this.

Very nice number. And probably is a later nadir, which may show she is settling into the insulin. They do seem to settle in with their body using the insulin more effectively after a few days, weeks, months. It's that ECID thing. But she is giving you lots to work with. Looks like manipulating the food a little will be a help.

Note what you did with the snack in the comments column so when you look back, you can remember what was different.

Her picture is darling!

She is the cutest thing (don't tell my other cat), she looks like a cartoon. She's a little like a munchkin with her stubby little legs!

Um so if I said +7 was 10 points lower would that be a good thing? Because it is! 172. So her nadir moved back 3 hours today, crazy?

I also noticed she is not quite as flat footed today, her gait is quicker, and her litter cakes are smaller.

Ten points lower on a test in the 180 range, would be considered the same number. We would say she was "surfing"-- the readings are not an "exact" scientific readings. So, it is fair to say that her +6 and +7 are the same reading--- BUT, that is a very good thing. You hope Kitten will continue to surf in these numbers until her preshot.

Good Luck!

Me too, but then there's the issue of what to do with her tonight. Won't worry about it til then, but preshot reading will be about 8:15pm if anyone happens to want to be around.....

Don't worry about tonight's dose yet! There normally is a lot of activity around 8:00-- so you should be able to get some help. I am certain she will go up by then-- you still have 5 hours to go.

You are doing great!

Yep, too good to be true, +8 is 227. But she just finished playing harder than she has done since she became symptomatic, so I'm happy she's happy! Thanks again for the support! Tonight I think we'll try breaking her food down into a couple smaller meals and see if that helps her see some effect from her injection overnight.

I dont think I have had the chance to say HI! and welcome!
You have an adorable kitty!
welcome to PZI andI look forward to getting toknow you both!

Cute pic! Is that a sweater she has on? My civvie Callie has gotten too skinny & acts like she's freezing so I tried to put a sweater on her....it was a disaster. I finally got her one of those pet electric heating pads & she loves it. Glad to hear she's feeling good!

Alrighty, PS is 339, gonna split food up tonight in hopes we can get her levels down overnight and not have red AMPS!
