So, met with our NEW new vet today who reviewed Kitten's medical file and looked at her curves before consulting me for a full hour and then REFUSING TO CHARGE FOR THE VISIT! I think I'm in love....

Based on her tests, current BG and "gerbil doses" of insulin he suspects she may not be a true diabetic and may just have a bad case of pancreatitis that is resolving. Thinks glucose values will be similar without insulin. Or it could be something else causing it but says don't worry until we see how she does OTJ. No more insulin for a week unless she starts hitting 500's, yay Miss Kitten! And I can get some freaking sleep!

Sleep is always good. It will be interesting to see if her levels stay below renal threshold without insulin. Anything above the 300 range that continued for a week would be pretty hard on her body.

Glad you like the new vet. No charge is great!

Hopefully, Kitten will be a transient diabetic and will be able to come off insulin. My dog, Sally, just went through a severe bout of Pancreatitis--ICU for 5 days. She has been on insulin now for 6 weeks--- initially it appeared that she would be transiet also--BUT, no such luck. It is often hard to tell what came first--the diabetes or Ptitis, as they both are problems with the pancreas. Kind of like ..the chicken or the egg!

Please continue to keep a check on the BGs--500s is REALLY High! Not going against your vet's recommentations, but while Sally was having Ptitis-- my vet encouraged me to keep her on insulin so no damage was caused while the Ptitis resolved. Once again, hopefully Kitten will stay in good numbers and the Ptitis will resolve and leave her OTJ! She was on a very small dose, so .....Here's hoping!

Keep a check on the ketones while she is on her OTJ trial!!!

Speaking of pancreatitis, my one real worry is pancreatic cancer, I lost my mom just over 3 years ago from it. Only 58 and gone in 6 weeks. In humans I know diabetes and pancreatitis are risk factors for developing cancer, does this hold true for cats?
