I had Kittycat at the vet yesterday to get bloodwork done since he had still been drinking and peeing a lot since being OTJ in April, and his furr was looking quite stringy and dull. (He drinks about a full bowl (250ml) per day.)
I just got a call from the vet saying that it is his kidneys failing but that she thinks he may be in the "earlier stages" because he is still eating. (He is currently on Fancy Feast Pate's).
She said his Urea and Creatine levels are elevated but that he is not at all anemic or dehydrated and that his phosporous and potassium levels are good. She guessed his is at stage 2 or 3.
She suggested I try him on K/D prescription diet because he needs a reduced protein and phosporous diet - but that the most important thing is for him to continue eating and drinking. With him being OTJ I don't want to feed him anything that is going to raise his BG.
She also mentioned that I can give him medication (ace inhibitors) to help with decreasing hypertension. The two she listed were Fortekor and the generic brand Benazepril.
I will definitely give him the ace inhibitors if that is something that will help him. Anyone else have a cat with CRF and diabetes? Any suggestions of canned foods that will work for both the diabetes and CRF?
I asked the vet how long a cat with CRF usually lives at this stage but she didn't have a answer
Is there much I can do to actually keep him at this stage?
