Keytones ???

So being that Spunky is currently in remission, this is something I don't need to do right now I suppose (check keytones).

When/if remission comes to an end though, I would love to have some information on this. I'm learning about measuring keytones through this site and would love more info on it. Her vet has never spoken about it so until this site I'd never considered it!

How do you check? What do you use? When do you check? What is the difference between checking keytones and BG? Is it necessary?

Ketones - altho' there are meters that test blood for ketones, most of us use 'Ketone Test Strips' and run it thru their fresh urine. Yes it's that simple! I just tell mine to 'pee on my stick', he'll let me run it thru the urine stream. He was a very private pee-er but now it's no biggie. I check him daily. Ketone test strips are available at about any place that carries diabetic supplies - humans use them often too. There are combo strips that check both glucose and ketones but if they're not spilling glucose into their urine, it doesn't show glucose in their urine.
 
Carter is pretty set in his urination patterns so I usually catch his urine on a spoon and then follow the instructions on the Ketone Test Strip vial. I got the Relion brand from Wal-Mart. I test daily at the moment, sometimes twice if I happen to catch him in there more than once. With 3 cats though, I have to make sure I'm on my game!
 
Well if Spunky ends up needing daily testing again I will be asking help from all of you! I have no idea how you all seem to know when you're guys are going to use the box! Erica - I feel you! I have 4!

Furthermore, I don't suspect she will let me get up in there while she's trying to pee!

Are ketones possible only when BG is high?

I'm lucky, Cooter tends to go after he eats, and is still in the stage where he drinks and pees alot (hence the testing for ketones). I don't believe Ketones are an issue with normal BG, but I am still very new to this, hope someone will correct me if i'm mistaken! BTW, spunky is absolutely adorable!!

Like Mogs said, ketones are possible with lower or normal numbers. Ketones and non-diabetic ketoacidosis can even occur in non-diabetic cats (and people). Typically, this happens when there is a disease that affects food intake or metabolism and causes body fat to be burned (hypertyroid, IBS, poor appetite, cancer, heart failure, etc). You'd notice weight loss or other signs such as a thin build or ribs that you can see. These would be an indication to check a cat who is in remission. If the cat is normal weight with normal eating and no other signs, then you probably don't need to worry about testing when in remission.
