Vegetable is coming home from the vet tonight after being dehydrated & having keytones so I wanted to make sure they are all gone. So my question is how often & how long should I be testing for keytones?
Are you using urine strips or blood strips? Do you have the ketone # info from the vet in regards to what level's Vegetable was at?
Typically I think I've heard twice a day, if not every few hours if you can. Luna had about trace levels and I was doing it once a day until they went away, though she was never dehydrated or symptomatic. I think the best answer is as much as you can until they're gone, especially if Vegetable became dehydrated/symptomatic.
Also put water in Vegetable's food if you can. I make Luna's pate wet food a 'pate soup' and she likes it. Will help flush ketones.
I noticed you started Lantus a few days ago. What was the "15.9" on 8/1 under PMPS? Also please try to get at least 4 tests a day, amps, +6-9, pmps, and a +2 before bed. Ketones develop from dehydration and not enough insulin, so we need to try and figure out what amount of insulin would be best for BG's and to prevent ketones from forming.
Agree, test a couple times a day at first. After ketones are gone you want to test daily for at least a week, then once or twice a week after for a couple weeks to make sure they are good and gone. Vegetable's ketones were moderate to high on the urine strip before she went to the ER from a previous post.
I'm using the urine strips for now, in May when she was diagnosed she was positive for 2 keytones in her urine. I will have the test reults from the vet tonight when I pick her up, I'm not sure how many keytones she had this time until I see the lab report.
I corrected the 15.9 from the August 1st reading, that was a typo on my end.
@Meya14 I will start testing as you suggested starting later tonight if I can.
