You can check if they are going to react to just the litter by taking some of the litter and wetting it with water, stick the Ketostix in that if it doesn't change color then you can wait until they jump out of the box before sticking it in the puddle. If it changes color in the littler that is just wet from water then you are going to have to get good with a ladle. Or you can use something that isn't going to absorb the urine like a clean box filled with aquarium gravel.
