Anyone know how long before ketones leave the body?
At the vet's office Tuesday, Simba tested +3 for ketones. She gave him toronto insulin to deal with that.
He's eating just fine,
He's drinking a little less than normal.
Give 50ml sub-q daily (though sometimes I do miss)

At 6:15am yesterday he tested positive for ketones. When I mentioned it to the vet she said it was normal for him to still have ketones in the body.

But.. when should I worry? I'm not sure when he's going to urinate.. when he was first diagnosed with diabetes he was urinating all the time! Now he's just not drinking as much.

Sorry for all my annoying 'newb' questions, I really appreciate your collective knowledge and support!

Sarah.

Sarah,

there is no such thing as toronto insulin....

why is he sending your cat home with ketones? ketones take fluids, humulin insulin and possibly further treatment if the cat becomes acidotic!

Jen

I think this is what I mean

It is a humulin insulin. I don't know how much she gave Simba. She gave 2u of glargine at the same time.

She sent him home because I can't afford the 'at least $1,100' price tag she put on it.

She was supposed to go over his test results with me today (full blood work and urinalysis) but she never got back to me.

How do I know if he becomes acidotic?

Simba's US converted ss is in signature, any help would be much appreciated.

Sarah.

ok so it was Novolin R or regular. I have never heard the toronto reference before

there is a big difference between ketones and acidotic and your vet should have talked with you about what to watch for! are you testing urine levels at home?

please call the clinic and find out what the test results are and what their instructions are for the weekend as this can be serious, then come on back and let us know

Jen

Hi Jen,

New update is here

sorry about the confusing/multiple threads, I've never used a message board before *shameface*

To answer your questions though, I got the wrong strips - I was using glucose strips by mistake. The pharmacy near the vet's place didn't have the keto strips, so I'm off to find them elsewhere.

He DID test positive for ketones +3 at the vet's Tuesday. That's why she dosed 'toronto' insulin.

Thanks :)
Sarah.
