Ketones! Just posted in health

Well Kim should be driving right now, let's wish her a safe trip!

Does she still have the UTI? If she still has an infection? that is #1 on the road to DKA, not saying that is where she is headed, only what lines up. #2 is ketones (in no particular order) but trace could be because she is not feeling well ....... so don't panic! 0.2 isn't anything on the meter and trace is not either, you just need to watch, esp. the urine. If the urine keeps going up, then we readjust.

It has been debated endlessly on the board but for Payne the urine tells me more, faster ....

Have you given fluids today? If you gave over 75 ml I would hold off and her temp. was up just a little. You watch her close enough that you will see a change, remember ketones are a PIECE of the puzzle, not the puzzle. If she stays at these #'s I wouldn't panic!

My vet checked her yesterday and we think the UTI is gone. Her urine was clear except for glucose, though the pH was low again. I will try to set up a box with hydrophobic sand and see if I can get her to use it. The fever is most likely due to the pancreatitis. Though it is usually sterile, it doesn't appear to be for her if attacks are bad. My guess is she leaks fluid. One very odd result yesterday was a very high lipase level. Though other things besides pancreatitis can raise that, given her kidney values it seems like pancreatitis is the culprit but the levels were scary high. We probably should run another spec fPL test as that is specific for pancreatic lipase but that requires a fast and I'm not sure I want to do that right now with her being so sick. It is pretty obvious she has pancreatitis anyway.

I was joking with Robin earlier about Shaikha scheming up new curveballs to throw my way. I think she achieved that today! Yikes.

Will wait a little while on the fluids. She seems to have absorbed them all, but I've given her about 150 ml in total per day split into two doses in the past with no issue. As long as she sucks them all down before giving more, we should be good.

Just an update, but her fever is down again and the last ketone test showed 0.0 again on the meter. Whew! I think the prior readings were due to the fever. Her temperature has fallen this afternoon, so that's a step in the right direction. Her last temp was 102.4, which is just below normal. She's still not that perky, but is moving around the house okay. I do plan to take her to the vet tomorrow and if he thinks we need to give her IV fluids, we'll do that as he can give her a stronger antibiotic to boost things. If she's still got the fever the extra hydration won't hurt anyway. The last time she had an attack like this IV fluids made a huge difference. Her fever was even higher then so we had to do fluids several times but it made her feel so much better and got the fever down.

Will continue to check on her. Her glucose is running higher this time than it was earlier, but still isn't bad. Will definitely ensure I keep that in check given the ketones earlier.

Sounds like you've had curve balls a plenty today. Glad things are settling down and yay for negative on the ketones!

Gosh sounds like you have had quite a day. So glad she hit some greens today, but sorry about the ketone scare and the pudding poo. Hopefully she is on the mend.
