Hey,

So sam tested positive for ketones, the stick was in between trace and low (5mg and 15mg). I had my dad test him as he was super high this morning (over 400 mg), and has now lost 0.6 lbs in 3 weeks. Figured i’d get some more answers over here. He had reduced his insulin dose from 3 units to 1 due to the very generous reductions called for by SLGS. Unsure what needs to be done.

With SLGS, the reductions are 0.25u. It looks like on occasion, you were taking larger reductions. I'd also be wary of taking back-to-back reductions. The insulin depot needs to stabilize.

We do not typically become overly concerned if ketones are at a trace level. However, I would be sure to add water to Sam's food and to not skip a shot if you're seeing ketones in the "low" range. Remember, the recipe for ketones is not enough insulin + not enough calories + an infection/inflammation. The latter element may or may not be a factor in a cat that is prone to developing ketones. It's good that you're monitoring.
