Hi,

If measuring ketones in blood using a meter (not urine sticks), what’s considered “time to go to the vet”?

ETA: got answers on FB page from Chris & China.

Just to add - anecdotally, Mr Kitty always reads a baseline of LO to 0.4. When he starts hitting 0.8 I know something is brewing, but yes not DKA-level worrisome until creeping up towards 2. Better to be proactive

I also want to clarify, I find that sticky misleading. If you read the paper, this is what it says (page 3)

At a cut-off value of 2.4 mmol/l, the sensitivity and specificity was 100% and 87%, respectively, for the diagnosis of DKA

Which I understand to mean that if you hit 2.4, DKA is basically guaranteed

I agree. I always find that misleading also. I’ll tag @Sienne and Gabby (GA) @Marje and Gracie @Wendy&Neko

you know, I’m glad to come back and see this - Snuggie’s BG was doing weird things and he’s usually at 0.2-0.4 ketones, the day I posted he was at 0.7. He was going to the vet today for routine bloodwork and I had them do a cysto and urinalysis just in case. Turns out he has a UTI, so maybe that all played together.
