I bought some TRUEplus ketone test strips from a Rite Aid Pharmacy. I called the product maker, Nipro, and neither the Pharmacist OR the company could tell me if they are ok to get kitty ketone levels! Any answers, please, cause Rusty came up "0" !!! :)

Thanx Chris! So that means human and animal urine would either show ketones or not, right? Cause I am ecstatic right now! :)

Thanx! I am soo happy!
Rusty isn't quite understanding all the hugs and kisses right now, especially since I had my hand under him while he was peeing! :bighug: Not really diggin' Mom right now...

Ketones in mammals tend to be similar in types, thus the strips should work OK.
Be aware they only detect 2 if 3 kinds of ketones, so they aren't foolproof.
If your cat has ever had DKA, then getting a blood ketone meter is a good idea. Those will detect ketones in the blood, on average, about 5 days earlier than they will show up in the urine. NovaMax Plus is one brand.

Thanx BJM! He has never had DKA, or ANY disease, for that matter, until the diabetes. I am just really happy right now about the 0 ketones! :) :) :)

@BJM: While on the subject of urine strips, would Keto Diastix (or other brands) help determine whether glucose levels are high, normal or too low?

They only show what has happened since the previous void and reflect accumulations over several hours. See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for more details on urine testing, as well as other observations which may be helpful to assess your cat, such as dehydration checks, and food and water intake and output.
There is an older protocol which uses these kinds of observations plus vet visits every 2 weeks (which hikes your costs up considerably).
