Keiko's readings have been in the 400s the last few days. He's not seemed himself. Keiko was listless last night so I took him to the vet this morning. His pancreatitis LIPA reading was incredibly high. In addition to blood tests, the vet did a chest x-ray since he was breathing hard. She thought he may possibly have pneumonia and did a test for heartworm (results not available yet). She prescribed antibiotics.
This evening he has no appetite, is breathing hard and he is listless. I called the vet this evening who told me to give him the antibiotics. I gave him the liquid but have not given him the pill yet. She also said to give him only a half dose of insulin if he does not eat.
My concern is his labored breathing and no appetite.
Any help appreciated.

Do you have an emergency vet you can take him to? Has he had a ketone test lately? The breathing and listlessness is concerning....that is something only a vetty can help with.

Sending tons of prayers, though....

Hi Maria - long time no see. Are you still with the same vet?

I agree that a vet visit is in order, perhaps a different one/ER vet. If Keiko has acromegaly, which he likely does, one of the things they can have is heart issues due to heart tissue growth. One of our other members (Andrea/Tennessee) had to take her acrocat into the vet earlier this week with similar symptoms. He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) and some fluid that needed to be tapped. It's manageable with medications, but should be treated ASAP before it gets worse. A heart ultrasound (echocardiogram) may be required.

I'm not sure what you mean by the pancreatitis LIPA reading. The test currently used is the Spec fPL or the Snap fPL. Here is Marje's primer on pancreatits that has lots of great detail. Breathing hard is not one of the symptoms - that's what is making me thing the heart.

This is a different vet (the one I had left) but its the same vet practice. The vet said a test she did for his heart test was normal. She said she could not hear a murmur but I have been told Keiko has one. I think she did mention ultrasound but it was not done today. She did a chest x-ray. I don't remember her saying anything about fluid. I hate that this is a weekend.

The reason I thought fluid was because the vet said pneumonia. That combined with the breathing hard and me hearing about Tennessee this week made me think heart.

Any chance there is another practice in your town open on Saturday? A while ago, I sent you the contact information for another person in your area who had an acrocat, maybe she has a good vet reference.

This does not sound like pancreatitis symptoms unless secondary to something else. I the vet is basing it in lipase and other regular blood tests that will work to diagnose a dog but not a cat. I hope you can get to an ER. :bighug:

Do you have any baby food? Sometimes Max will eat that when he won't eat anything else. He likes Gerbers. I used to finger feed it to Tiffany.
