--- Helen, Dyana, Wendy, and Carla, THANK YOU so much for being so sweet and supportive, and for sending all the vines and hugs! Karre should be out by now - they said they would call if there was any problem (no call, so I'm assuming that's a case of no news = good news), and we should be able to pick him up at 3 (which is in 2 hours from now). He's going to get spoiled rotten when he gets home! Poor little Emperor - he's always so brave! We heart him lotses.

Thanks for the update. We're waiting with you. Although, I will be at work, when you get to pick him up. I can't wait until he's home with you.

The vet called: Karre did great!! They drew blood as well - I assume to do a senior blood panel. DH will confirm that when he picks him up in 2 hours. Next week, it's time for Queen Magpie's dental.

I'll update when Karre is home again! Can't wait!

Karre may just be arriving home now and we are so happy that he had a good dental and that there were no teeth problems. I love that pic of him displaying his teeth. He's got lots of teeth!! (Poor Rusty is down to 5, all on the bottom!) Enjoy your afternoon tea/coffee with the Emperor and his Court.

Thanks so much, Ella! Karre will be home in another hour and a half or so. Yes, he does have all his teeth :smile: No extractions today either, I assume. DH will confirm that when he picks him up.

So is he back from the dentist now? It's always so worrisome when they have to go under, but necessary dental is necessary.

BTW, Salem is doing fine. I think it's been a bit over two months now - he had a couple of days last week of bgs in the 120's and 130's, but I think it was a combination of my being away so he had to go back to two meals/day instead of the three/day I've been feeding, plus he threw up a couple of times, plus he's always high in the morning especially when I'm an hour and half late getting up and feeding them. :oops: Last test he was back in the 50's. :)

Everyone: KARRE IS HOME!

I'm sooo relieved! He is fine, a touch groggy still, but his appetite is great and he's eagerly accepted all his treats for being so brave :mrgreen: The vet said she was very pleased with how his teeth look, very strong and healthy, no extractions necessary and none anticipated for a long while yet, hooray! The blood she drew was to check his thyroid, apparently... I'm not certain why she thought that was necessary, but DH is calling her in a bit just to confirm if she is worried or simply being vigilant with a senior cat. Last blood work showed all systems to be working as they should, kidneys, liver, thyroid, blood count, all good. I hope that the same will be true this time - I assume the thyroid isn't the only thing that will be tested, but as I said, I'll know that a little later today.

Oh, I'm just so relieved to have him home safe and sound! (No BG test yet today, since I feel he's been through enough. We'll get one in the late evening, a few hours after his late afternoon meal.) He's so stoic! I love that. Very unflappable! I'm much more flapped than he is with this stuff :lol: Lots of flapping when he's at the vet. He's home he's home he's home :-D

Next week, I will be even more on edge, when Maggie has to go for her dental. Her teeth are not as top-notch as Karre's are. She's missing one of her upper canine teeth - before she came to us, she was very badly abused, and someone had kicked her in the face so hard that her tooth broke. The vet saw it when we took her in right when she first came to us, and it had to be extracted. I hope she will be alright. She's very healthy and strong. But she's my soul cat. I don't even want to think about something going wrong, or anything bad happening to her. I'll be so worried that day. But I'm sure Karre will take her aside and tell her those dentals are a piece of cake and afterwards you get tons of treats, and then she'll be perfectly fine!

I'm so glad to hear Karre came through his dental just fine and that he still has all of this teeth. I know what you mean about worrying. When Furball had her dental last month, it was hard to focus on doing anything the whole time she was at the vet, even after they called to tell me she came through fine. I just wanted to get her home.

I hope the bloodwork is just precautionary for a senior kitty and everything comes back good.

Hope the dental went well. I know how nerve racking it can be. Did you know that Max was able to have a dental with sedation only? Might be something to try as Karre gets older. Max has CRF, and I would be terrified to put him under all the way.

YaaaaY for Karre's good dental!!! I'm so glad he's done and everything went well! I hope Maggie has the same type of dental as Karre.

I'm curious how much is good genes, how much good diet and care in the equation of good teeth. Going from my experiences it seems that genes are most important but just wondering how it plays out. My cats are/were mother & daughter, both with excellent teeth. I brush and they have good diets so don't really have a basis for comparison. I don't take for cleanings at the vet though. I'm too afraid of anesthesia with her asthma.

It seems Karre has excellent teeth too at 16. Wondering what care you give. For instance, I'm know he eats great. Do you brush his teeth? Do you take him to have tooth cleanings when nothing is wrong that you know of with teeth? I'm just curious what other people do and wonder if it's mainly a matter of genes no matter what we do.

He deserves a nice break with good treats today. :-D

--- Melanie, thank you so much for the cheers! :smile: I cannot brush Maggie's teeth. She was abused very severely and will not tolerate that. It is a battle to pill her even, or give any other meds, and only I can do it. She does not trust anyone but me or DH. I think she is genetically unlucky on top of everything, when it comes to teeth. We will make sure she goes in for dentals regularly to help keep her teeth healthy. Believe me, there is NOTHING I would not do for her. Nothing. But I won't put her through something that will make her so frantic she tries to bite me, and throws up, and screams in panic. I won't. Maggie has an excellent diet. Raw food, with organic, antibiotic-free, hormone-free, free-range chicken and ostrich meat, with chunks she has to chew to help with dental function and hygiene, and so she uses her teeth the way that cats' teeth were designed to be used. She is also an avid hunter and eats mice and birds every couple of weeks. The care she gets is excellent as far as I can tell. So that's the care I give. :smile:

Calli gave me a ferocious battle about brushing too so I was never able to do a good job on her, unlike Racci. Calli wasn't scared though, she was just a brat. ;-) ;-) She still had great teeth at 16 when she passed, even tho she never went for a dental. I think with her it was just good genes & diet more than anything else.

It's too bad Maggie's one of the unlucky ones & is scared on top of it. I wouldn't force it either if she's afraid though. Poor Maggie had a rough start. She's so lucky she found you. I hope she has a good dental this time.

Great report for Karre, and many prayers for sweet Maggie next week. Poor little girl...what a rough start, but she is so very fortunate to have found you!
 
--- Melanie, that's great about Calli and Racci and their amazing teeth! Lucky! Magpie is terrified of the vet. She is completely non-aggressive, but she becomes so frightened that she hyperventilates and salivates and everything... It kills me every time she has to go in. I just always think - I know her teeth aren't great, and I know it would help if they could be brushed. But her QOL would take such a hit if she had to go through the daily trauma, that it just isn't worth it. Here in SA, vet care has a lot of not-so-great things about it, but it's also far less expenseive (from what I can tell) than it is in the States/Canada. So I'd rather take her for a dental once every couple of years, make sure she gets the perfect diet, and make sure I do everything else I can to keep her healthy, and just accept that she's predisposed to dental problems, you know? She's my soul cat. She's ME, in a cat. When I have a bad day she comes in from the garden on her own to be close to me. My Magpie :smile: Thanks for all your kind words and messages! You're a star!

--- Amy, thanks so much for stopping in! Yes, my babygirl did have a very rough go of it. I met her for the first time in the "cat garden" at our local shelter. There are many dozens of cats there. No one has personal space - though the shelter staff do such a terrific job of trying to keep everyone happy. I saw Maggie crouching under a hedge in the cat garden, shaking, terrified of everything and everyone around her... I went there every few days for three months before she even struck her head out of that hedge. But I couldn't not go. I had to keep seeing her. She was meant for me. In the fourth month, she eventually crept out and would sit a couple of yards away, clearly wanting to come closer, but too afraid I'd turn out to be another person who'd just hurt her. It makes me sick to think what people must have done to her to make her so petrified - she was only three months old when I first met her... In the fifth month, she suddenly decided I was safe for her, and she walked onto my lap and purred, and I cried :smile: Another month later, we took her home.

I know so many of the FDMB peeps have stories like this, about cats that simply filled perfectly that empty space that was in them. I had a Maggie-shaped absence in me, until I found her :smile:
