Karre's Caturday Condo (15/9/2012)

Greetings, Lantus Land!

Here we are again, another week having flown by since Karre's 8th September Condo, and once again there are some great LL Highlights to report on - well done, Lantus Landers! It is my pleasure as Jane the Lowly Minion - or Janie Jane, as I was recently named - to do our Emperor's bidding and present to you a few choice condos for your particular perusal.

First off, an M.I.A. shout-out to Denise/Shakespeare. If anyone's seen them, please check in here and let us know, we're a bit worried since the last we heard from them was in their 28th August Condo.

Next, Lisa/Leo created a wonderful summary of the lessons they learned from the cycles they rode out in spite of lots and lots of drama (we LOVE the drama, don't we, guys!), and posted their Summary Condo for the benefit of all LL'ers. Thanks, Lisa! It's great to be able to read through something likes this - there are a few cat-and-bean teams contending with rapid-succession dosecreases and the effects thereof - Ashley/Sushi among them, as seen in their 13th September Condo - and being able to look back on example situations like yours is wonderful.

Alexa/Reuben, too, went through more exciting cycles, and prompted a lively discussion of FD treatment and the need for flexibility and interpretive scope when trying to roll with the sugary punches, so to speak - check out their 10th September Condo to consider the points made and your own perspective on them. How well do *you* roll with the punches? Reuben seems to have overcome his LB issues, but is battling recurring pancreatitis symptoms and still isn't cuddling the way he used to - we wish you luck finding the magic bupe dose/regimen and hope that Reuben will soon be a total velcro kitty again! Good luck with that nasty flea problem too!!

Carla/Furball
did us all a great service by asking after carbs percentages in fuds in their 9th September Condo, reminding us to be aware of ECID, no matter how often we hear or read that mantra, because it's crucial when attempting that flexibility mentioned above, in dealing with the curve balls FD can throw us as beans and specifically as FD-caregivers.

Amy/Trixie posted a lovely condo asking about the stories behind our darling cats' names, and it is an absolute delight to read! Thank you, Amy, for posting the LL Cat Names and their Stories Condo.

Another great laugh is Dale/Max's condo on How to Know You Have Been Thoroughly Assimilated into LL. Thanks for the giggles, Dale - we loved this! It's wonderful to be reminded that it's just as important to laugh about the craziness of TR as it is to try and stick to it! And Thank You, dearest Borg Queen - your version of "How To Know..." was my absolute favourite

Also, Carolyn of CD/Big Mac is recovering well from her surgery, as you can read in the lovely Update Condo posted by Carolyn's daughter Lynn. Thank you, Lynn! And keep getting better, Carolyn! HIP HIP Hooray indeed!

And in other news (again, please forgive me if I have not named you personally, and remember I try to rotate as best I can so you're sure to end up in the LL Highlights or the Overview one day soon): Tara/Buster are going for their next dosecrease which will hopefully bring the desired blues and greens - fingers and paws are crossed, guys! Deborah/Shasta are searching for a suitable 10/11% carb food - suggestions are welcome in their condo for those of you who missed it - oh, and Shasta could use some pointers as to what else, other than *litter,* she can use to give herself facials  Shasta is showing some very promising blues and greens - Yay! Lisa/Leo are struggling with Leo's recurring diarrhoea (and Lisa offered up a delightfully colourful expression describing the olfactory effects thereof - not a laughing matter, but still, thanks for the giggle, Lisa!) - Leo may have EPI, so we wish you both a quick diagnosis of whatever is going on, and we also hope that your weekend travels go well. Shannan/Jean Luc got their first splendidly green pre-shot, stalling at first to see if JL would rise, but then decided to skip, reminding us that it really is better to be safe than sorry especially when one is faced with one's FIRST green pre-shot and has no back-up helpers, which thankfully does not happen often here in LL - many congratulations for Shannan's and JL's great progress!! Roni/Moonie are facing a possible Hyper-t DX for Moonie, who also had some appy issues (which seemsed to resolve with some magical LL vines, thank heavens) - and Roni, who's been having migraines, poor dear, has a fair this Sunday for which we wish her luck! Michelle/Mannie delved into the finer points of feline culinary persuasion, when Michelle's DGS Nicholas tried to offer oatmeal and blueberries to Mannie and, when neither elicited enthusiasm, switched to hugs and nanners: Excellent judgement with none other than LL's head of the kitchen krew in the end there, Nicholas, and in one so young and adorable! Deb/Yahtzee are polishing those BOS: there were a couple of "shooting a dropping numbers" events and some beautiful greens, very well done, you guys!! Kathy/Cleo have popped back into LL and are trying a decrease - we wish them the best of luck with that and want to emphasize what a great job Kathy's been doing managing Cleo's numbers, especially that surprise dip into the low 40s, a situation which also reminded us all that it's important not only to stay on top of low dips by feeding HC when needed, but then also to allow HC to actually kick in and do its job before reloading. Dale/Max considered starting their OTJ trial, but Max's surprise AM number prompted reconsideration - another good lesson: We here in LL TR like to advocate giving insulin as long as the kitty will tolerate it, to make for the strongest possible remission - You're almost there, Dale, and we can't wait to count those trial days with you until we all PARTY together!! Jill/Charlie are struggling somewhat with how different a cat can seem when the FD-treatment hasn't hit its ideal rhythm yet and when there are other health factors complicating matters - Jill, it's great to reach out the way you did, and we'll be here for support as you find your way towards steadier and steadier progress! Don't lose hope, ok - and (This Just In) CONGRATS on your dosecrease, you did a GREAT job!! Chris/Tucker checked in from the Falls with a happy Hello - great to see you fellas! Shai/Pirate Fitz had a food trial which started off beautifully, and after a little detour, they're now ready to try again: Good luck, you guys! Pat/Raja/Shadow divided and hopefully conquered when Pat went on a trip to NY and entrusted the kitties to the pet sitter - we hope everything went well. Devon/Peter/Mocha celebrated Mocha Jo Latte's 9th birthday and a year and a half of OTJ after a spectacular, two-year sugardance - congrats on both counts to all three of you!! Donna/Doogle went for a dosecrease to get some better numbers - many vines are being sent for progress to be reported, and we were very glad to hear Donna's mum is recovering well and was able to be moved out of the SICU and into a room - vines are underway for a continuing recovery! Anne/Liz/Zener welcomed Anne back from her trip, we're glad tyo have you back with us, Anne, and thanks, Liz, for a great job holding down the fort with Zener! Wendy/Tiggy have re-started Bailey on insulin again with a very special "TR microdose protocol" - love the name, Wendy, and we wish you the very best of luck with Bailey's treatment - hopefully, he won't throw a surprise 16 at you this time around!! Ann/Maggie and Melissa/Tarragon are battling the beginning of cold and flu season - get well vines extra strength underway to you, ladies! Pip/Rupert are battling the bounciness Rupert exhibits despite Pip's brave efforts to curb it, and Pip could use some extra supportive vines to help with the understandable frustration - hang in there, you guys, and have a great time at your horse show; I'm sure Noelle will do a great job with the skinny 2u pet-sitting dose! Libby/Doug/Hershey reached their 3-month mark on Levemir (and 8 month mark on insulin) and while thing aren't perfect quite yet, Hershey has shown some wonderful progress - we are absolutely thrilled for you guys! Lyresa/KT have had some superb greens - well done and woohoo! Georgia/Simon demonstrated with panache how cats will often respond to even the *threat* of an increase wil gorgeous numbers - Simon showed a lovely green PMPS just as Georgia was considering Sienne's suggestion of throwing the fat back on his dose  Way to go, Simon! Keep it up, EVERYONE!

And now for some WCRs from our African Pride! Marje and Gracie with their new, snappy username posted a great reminder of how important WCRs and Spreadsheets are to all those of us who like to lend a helping hand (read: an advising mind), so far be it from me to be remiss in complying with the Borg Queens' commands! Resistance is, after all, futile  Onwards, then: His Majesty Karre the Emperor of Basically Everything is in excellent health, presenting all 5 P's daily and expressing - thank heavens - his satisfaction with his minions' services. While he does keep on throwing us numbers above 120 (but below 150), his pancreas brings him back down every time, so we are overall very happy with his OTJ exploits. (If any of you see cause for concern on his SS, do point it out to us.) Queen Magpie is doing a wonderful job of making sure His Royal Highness stays happy - she naps next to him daily, cleans him, cuddles with him, and hisses at Luca and Henry when they try to bug him during down-time. The Boys, Henry and Luca, continue to expand their tree-climbing prowess, as will become evident when it's picture time, below. Luca is, of course, already thoroughly used to living the good life - the life of Riley, wasn't it, Jill? - but Henry still has these incredible moments of sheer joy upon realizing that this really, really, really is his life now. Today he had another, while on a cat walk with us: Suddenly, from sitting quietly on the lawn, he jumped up, looked up at the sky and around at the trees, and raced in these enormous, joyful leaps back and forth in circles across the upper lawn. I feel supremely blessed to have witnessed his moment of purest happiness at being alive, healthy, safe, and loved, and I find myself resolving once again to take more moments like that for myself also. So there you have it - we all, it seems, are counting our blessings, and we all are happy and glad to be able to keep being a part of LL.

The WBRs are good, as well. Jack is crazy busy. I am crazy busy. And to make sure I have to rest and put my foot up now and then, I went outside barefoot and stepped on what most likely was a little scorpion. I have an interestingly purple toe now, and some pain, but otherwise, it will just serve to remind me that when I don't take time to stop and breathe and rest, life will happen and ensure that for me  It's my own fault - I should have worn shoes! Hope the little fellow is ok - I never saw him, and I bet he's glad not to see me again, either  Can't blame him, really. Otherwise, things are good (albeit crazy busy). No rest for the wicked, and whatnot!

And now, enough talk - it's picture time! I have for your viewing pleasure an assortment of impressions from the past week. A couple of wild irises from the garden - there you go, Carl! Did you get the primroses yet? - and some other flowers from around the house, and from the World of Birds, where I like to go when I have time in between things to do for work and so on. It's a very inspiring place for me - all the colours and sounds and wonderful creatures are simply incredible to be around, and I love being there when I need a bit of a push in a writing project. The marmosets have tiny babies - you can see one darling playing peek-a-boo from behind his mum's head! And, well - the rest, just see for yourself! (Gold stars for those of you who can identify that bird... Famous, but not often easily recognized, I suspect!)

I hope you enjoy the Caturday Condo, as always! DO check in with your own WCRs and WBRs when you can, or just to hang out, or to vent, or to post your own weekly impressions of whatever made you stop and think how beautiful things can be. We think of you all!

Hugs,
Jane

I am going to guess "Kookaburra"?

Just amazing photos as usual Jane. And the weekly round-up report is such a help to anyone (like me) who doesn't have the opportunity to drop in on every condo over the course of the week.

No, I haven't gotten the primrose yet. I am thinking that I will need to wait until springtime here to plant them? I'll have to figure out a location to keep the deer away and give them a chance to grow.

The baby marmoset has got to be the cutest thing ever!

I just got back from the beach, so I can share a couple of photos...

Jane,

Thanks so much for the recap!! This really helps a newbie (myself) stay up to date on the happenings, with links included to refer back to!

I absolutely love your pics!!! I don't think you could have ever timed a better pic of Mr. Baby Marmoset-adorable! And the flowers... WOW... take my breath away!! I grew up on a small farm with greenhouses full of plants and flowers, but only Minnesota-hardy (hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters) varieties. The beauty of the world is unbeknownst to me. Thank you for the enlightenment!

Your furry family is gorgegous! The tree climbing pics really show off the natural feline traits. I'm scared to death to let my guys outside for tree climbing sessions; maybe I should cut down part of a tree and put it in the garage... hmmm.

Thanks for brightening Caturday!! :-D

You just are so amazing!! Recap of what's going on in LL life here, informative info, lovely thoughts for all, and the most amazing pictures that can be captured of wildlife & flowers of your part of the world!!!
Thanks for this..We used to have a Roving Reporter, Liz, and now this from a far side of pur world--
Thanks to you all for the wonderful Caturday Condo--Sending you Love & Hugs from us!!!

--- Carl, got it in one  (Do you *have* those on your island? I thought they were native to Down Under only. Or are you just ornithologically advanced? I had *no* idea what this fellow was before the day I took that photo! Everybody knows the song, though, don't they!) I adsore the feisty crab photo! And the flower is beautiful - thanks for posting! What else ya got?

--- Deb, you're very welcome! I;m glad newbies and hopefully others are finding the LL Highlights useful. LL does get crazy busy, so I just firgured I might as well take a couple of hours each Saturday and try and do a bit of an overview. It's fun, and if it's useful, even better! Oh and I think a climbing tree in the house (or garage_ is a great idea! You know those big "trees" (without leaves) they make for parrots? Maybe one of those could work! (I take it your kitties are inside-onlies?)

--- Roni - right back at you! YOU are amazing, with all the loving, caring support you are alway ready to give to any bean or cat! You're a ray of sunshine in LL! I remember the Roving Reporter (and wasn't there another version of LL reporting done by Hillary/Maui as well?). Love and hugs to you and yours, too!

--- Chris! Great to see you in here - how is Tucker feeling this weekend? And you? Oh and no, you're wrong about the bird. Carl got it right!

--- Sandy!! How are YOU? It's been a while since I've spotted you posting, but I've thought about you and the legendary BK a lot. How are things? HUGS!

A BIG thumbs up to you Janie Jane for that wonderful wrap up summary on the LL beans & kitties :thumbup \M/
Thankyou for all your support, advice & comforting to all the newbies & beans here.

Jane, lol, your clue gave it away:-) My first thought was "famous? Must be a song."..and I knew it wasnt a mockingbird. No, we don't have them here, and I believe they are only a down-under bird. I'm not "advanced" but I am an amateur birder, and very familiar with the local species. I'll share more pics as the week progresses:-)
Oh, technically, Chris gets partial credit, as the kookaburra is a member of the kingfisher family ;-) . It does resemble our local 'fishers. But more colorful than ours.

I shall wear my gold star proudly on my forehead all week long

Carl

Second Caturday Condo I've read and not disappointing! Love reading these as they are so informative and up beat. Thank you! I especially like the links provided. Thank you again!

And the pictures are also great. I must admit, I thought Kingfisher as well.

Thank you, Jane, for taking the time, thoughtfulness and effort in posting the Caturday Condos. :-D

I also thought Kingfisher when I saw the picture. I'm not familiar with the Kookaburra song.

Furball has recovered quite nicely from her dental and having one bad tooth removed. She has returned to her normal happy, purry self. She has one more day of her after dental AB and she has been fighting me on it. That tells me she's feeling very good.

--- Helen, you're so sweet, thank you very much, and good luck with your dosecrease!

--- Carl, yay, I can't wait for your birdie pictures!!

--- Teresa, you're very welcome, I'm pleased we're staying up to your standards so far  I myself also thought it was a kingfished when I first saw this lovely fellow - only when I read the explanatory sign did I realize I was in the presence of a musical icon

--- Carla, the song is a canon, and the lyrics go: "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he. Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra, gay your life must be!" I learned it in kindergarden  I'm so glad to read Furball is back to her happy, purry self after her dental!

Afternoon Sir Karre - thank you for bringing MamaBean/PapaBean back here! What beautiful things you have to explore too! You iz a lucky babee....

Jane - answered your 'signature' question...link HERE so you won't have to go look....

Jane, what is that first orange flower with such a yellow center? It's just so striking!

Carl - yes, wait until spring to plant primrose...those are just so breathtaking to me - they look fake! Love the crab too - they make me laugh.

HUGS!!!

Lyresa, the flower you mention is a type of wild iris, as far as I know! My mother-in-law is the one with the green thumb and vast horticultural knowledge. I just try to keep up  Maybe one day you'll visit South Africa and can come on a garden walk with us and our cats! Who knows.

Anne, I'm so happy you like this condo :-D We do them each Caturday! Keep visiting if you can, ok? Each condo is open all week until the new condo opens  It's been great hanging out with you and Muffin!

Thanks for visiting!!
Hugs
Jane

Great Caturday report and thanks for the summary!

No help here on the duplicates. That happens to us sometimes too, and most often when the board seems slow.

Really great update on everyone which helps a lot, especially getting to know the new kitties and their Beans. Beautiful flowers and awesome pics of your furbaby family. I was looking at the Meercat. Can you get close to him/her?

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. I look forward to reading these every week. Have a great day!

I didn't get here early enough. I would have gotten the bird right.
They are pretty neat.
So are the kiwi's.

and my favorite aussie animal of all time is the wombat.
wombat.jpg

that's because it gets so little attention.
The koala gets all the attention.

I love Karre's Caturday reports. Next time Shasta gives herself a facial, I will do my best to sneak a picture!!!! Hope you all have had a wonderful weekend. Love all the pictures!!

~Deborah & Shasta

Wow, Jane! I second Emperor Karre's approval of this thread! So much great info, and I love the little glimpses into South Africa you give us with the amazing photos. It's always such a pleasure to read your updates.

Hi Jane,

Love the photos and the report as usual. The marmosets are so precious! I could just hug them. Of course your babies are beautiful too.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Melanie & Racci

--- Anne, thanks, and I'm glad you like the summaries

--- Ann, thank you  I'm thrilled you find this helpful! It does take quite a number of hours to create the Caturday Condos with the LL Highlights and whatnot, so I'm glad they're being deemed useful and enjoyable :-D The meercats at the World of Birds live in their special enclosure where they can build their tunnels and burrows and whatnot and have a grand old time. One can get fairly close to them, but the enclosure is walled so one can't touch them. They can bite, too, so it's a good thing they and the hoomans who come to delight in watching them are safe! I do wish one could cuddle them though!

--- Jo, you're very welcome! I'm glad you'll be a regular visitor!

--- Rhiannon, by "the kiwis" do you mean the birds? I've never seen those, only on National Geographic shows  They have a pair of cassowaries at the World of Birds, though - very odd-looking fellows, but somehow beautiful too. I LOVE the wombat picture! Thanks!

--- Deborah, yes pleeeease get a photo of the litter-"facial" if you can  I'm glad you didn't mind my little quip! Was that Shasta wearing that green tie you posted in another condo? What a cool picture that is!

--- Kathy, thanks so much for the compliment! I'm so pleased you enjoy Karre's Caturday Condos - he does so enjoy inviting all of you into his royal realm

--- Melanie, thank you! I'm so happy you've given this your stamp of approval! Yes, those tiny marmosets are just unbelievably adorable!! That mommy-marmoset had 2 babies! I actually have a photo of them both sitting on her back - I'll post that for you in Racci's next condo if you like

Thank you all for hanging out with me in here! I'm loving the way the Caturday Condos stay open all week thanks to all of you joining in!
Happy Monday!

Hugs

Hi Jane

We're a little late getting around to the Caturday Condo - but better late than never! The recap of interesting and educational condos is terrific - thanks for including us, and we learned a lot from the other condos. It's great that you do this - I get really busy and can't make it to all the condos every day.

Kookaburra - I remember that song from Kindergarden too! Of course, I've never seen one in person, but it's nice to put the face of the bird to the lyrics of the song! Wonderful pictures - thanks for sharing.

No worries, Lisa! Since Karre's condos are open for a whole week, there not really any "coming in late" I'm glad you enjoyed the recaps etc. - lots of us here get too busy to visit every single condo or to remember all details about LL'ers and their kitties, so I just figure, it's nice to try and give an overview. And I love to read you also know the Kookaburra Song! It's a great childhood memory, for me! Any more pictures of handsome Leo for us to delight in?

Hugs
Jane

OT - A friend of mine (who must have some kind of ESP or something) sent me a link to The Prodigy's "Smack My ***** Up" this morning. Now I can't get it out of my head!

Kind of OT, but relevant to all those giving advice: Remember, everyone, that the very first rule of giving adice is "Do No Harm." And the best way to make sure you comply with that is to make sure any advice you give is seen, out in the open, right here, in condos. Sienne reminded us all of that today, and it's important for everyone to remember that. Whatever your thoughts, share them openly. If you're right, GREAT. If you're not, that way, someone can add their input.

Thanks, Sienne. A good point. Stop by sometime, if you can! We'd like to see you here too!
Jane

Beautiful photos, Jane.

I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to overlooking the informational posts (not the stickies) at the top of the Board. The one that I have read and referred to repeatedly is Janet & Binky's post, Information for Advice Givers. I suspect that many people, especially if new to FDMB and LL, don't think they will be offering advice. I think it's still a good read. One of the points that Janet made is,
Janet & Binky said:
Keep your advice public. Helping cats is a team effort, and it's undermined when people are receiving offline advice, unknown to the rest of the group. Many sets of eyes are better than one.
The heart and soul of LL is that we rely on peer review. Any of us can mis-type, mis-speak, or simply relay information that may not be applicable to a particular cat or an individual situation. Having everyone here being able to raise a question, do research, or correct presented information is invaluable. I have a very clear memory of someone's vet prescribing a medication for a cat that was on multiple meds. I love doing this kind of research and in going through the list of meds and researching interactions, came across information that the new med did, in fact interact with other meds in a potentially life threatening way. That's the value of this board.

Good posts Larissa and Sienne.

I agree Janet's post on advice givers is good for everyone to read...not only those making suggestions but new members as well so they know what to "expect". If they experience something that does not appear in keeping with the intent of Janet's post, they can ask about it.

Sienne, lovely to see you here - and THANK YOU for your thoughts. I appreciate you taking the time to post here and remind us of the post for Advice Givers! It's great to remember posts like that, and why the guidelines laid out therein are so important.

Marje, thanks for stopping in! We always love to see you  It's wonderful to have you ladies pop by and highlight the things that make LL really work. Thank you!!

Hugs,
Jane

Hi again Jane!

Oh yes, please do post the mama marmoset with the babies. I love the photos. I love your updates too, being one of those who always wants to visit everyone but always seems to run out of time, but the photos are my favorite. I love looking at sweet healthy animals.

Melanie & Racci

Wow. Ever notice how some people will just be complete jerks no matter what you do? I hope all of you had a jerk-free day

Jane

Edited to add: Had yet another frustrating, infuriating exchange with bloody, dratted Home Affairs here who are taking literally YEARS to process our marriage certificate... I just had to vent. Hence the "jerks will be jerks" thing.

Yes, I've had weird days like that :? I hope your evening gets better :YMHUG: .

I love the 3rd flower picture (and all the rest, especially the tree climbing kitties), what is the name of that flower?

Hi Dyana! Sorry, I have no idea what that flower is called! I'll ask my mother-in-law and get back to you.

Alas, the evevning did not improve. I have had some disturbing news, and I'll need to take a bit of time away from the board.
Be good, everyone!

Hugs
Jane

Hi Jane,

I love the quips! I asked Shasta to come model her facial the next time she's sportin' the litter face! Unfortunately, I think she gets the litter head when she's not feeling well and she has problems in the LB. So, really, I wouldn't mind if it was a really long time before I capture a picture of that!!! :-D

And no, that was not Shasta in the tie, but she would look rather cute in a tie!!!!

Hey Jane,
Thanks for another great Caturday Condo. (Well, I should say: thank Karre for another great Caturday Condo!) So much good info. here, good chat, great pictures, and everything to inspire all of us who are doing the sugar dance. And thank you for jumping in to help out on so many occasions. When problems come up in the middle of the night (for us), there you are!

Have a lovely week. Hugs to you and scritches to Karre and his Court!

Karre's Caturday Condo

What a great condo! I'm on my third load of laundry for the day and there are about 4 more waiting to be done -- with one that needs spot treatment. Given that this is only part of my everyday toil and trouble, LOL, it's fun to have a way to read up on everyone's trials without trying to visit all the condos! Thank you, Jane!!!!

Hi Dale! Great to see you here as always  And thank you so much for your enthusiastic praise for the Caturday Condo(s) - in fact, thank all of you who posted to say how you love them and how useful you find them. That's the perfect inspiration for me to keep posting them - the next one is going up this Saturday. It may well be pretty extensive, being that I missed last week when I was off the board for those few days.

Thanks again, all of you who've posted your support  It's lovely to be able to be a part of such a special place with such incredible people!

Back to bed for me - flu and fever are making me loopy AND crabby!
Hugs
Janie Jane

Thanks for the great Caturday report! I love those.
A little late getting my reading done, just recently back on regular basis on the board with our first ever foster - Katmandu.

You are in a part of the world that I would love to visit one day. Keep posting pics!

Hi Jane-
Wow, what a great way to get to know everyone on LL. Thanks for writing such a fun summary and sharing pictures.

Hope you have a wonderful day.

Jane, thanks for posting in support of Furball's green the other day. I hope you get over the flu quickly. Feel better soon.
