I have the paperwork from the vet and just glanced down and saw that she wrote:
Mild UTI, antibiotics caused intestinal distress, gave antibiotic shot to last 2 weeks, need to revue urine in 2 weeks to see if we need to repeat it.

Could this be why his numbers are still so high? Or at least ONE of the reasons he's running high?

Infection is notorious for raising glucose levels. Bladder and dental are 2 of the most common types. How do his teeth look?

It does not say what the antibiotic was. Why do you ask? Something I need to know?

Although it does say that he was on Prozinc 2 units and switched to Lantus 3 units before sending him home.

Some cats have a reaction to the shot...given once in place of daily antibiotics for 2 weeks....
Maybe you could do some research into it and see if that's what they gave him.

There are a couple of issues. And yes, an infection will cause higher BG numbers.

In order to properly diagnose and treat a UTI, a sterile urine sample is needed. This is taken by a procedure called a cystocentesis (a needle is used to draw urine from the bladder). The sample is then cultured to determine if there's bacteria and if so, what kind of bacteria it is so the proper antibiotic can be given. This latter process is called a culture & sensitivity (C & S). Unless you were charged for this procedure, it wasn't done. As a result, the antibiotic chosen is just a shot in the dark.

Once the antibiotic is done, you need to wait a couple of weeks for the med to be out of your cat's system and then the cysto and C & S re repeated to see if the bacteria is gone.

It does sound like your vet used Convenia. This is a shot that lasts 2 weeks. Many vets won't use this antibiotic. There are two reasons. The first reason is that it's indication is for skin infections so it's use for a UTI isn't really warranted. More importantly, though, because it lasts 2 weeks, if a cat is going to have an allergic reaction, once the antibiotic is in, you can't get it out.

I'll call and get back to you on the shot.

I have no idea what tests were done, I'll see if I can find the paper and if it's on there. I know his little visit cost me over $700, I hope it was done!

OK, vets office says he was given Convenia and that they have had a very good response to it and that they did an 'in house' urinealisys (sp) but NOT a C & S. I told her that I am checking his BG regularly and he is running high and that I need information before I bring him back in next week. They are about to find out that I WILL question everything! I was in shock to start with, but have gathered enough info to be more proactive in his treatment and if they don't like it, I'll find another vet! I have no loyalty when it comes to my own or my pets medical care. If I don't have the trust in a DR, I find another one. I've had the same MD for 4 yrs and it took a while to find someone that understands and allows me my questions etc. He knows how argumentative I can be and helps me with my issues, I expect the same from my vet.

Hi guys,

It's good to find out these things! Convenia (= "convenient") must be approached carefully. Since Lucien didn't seem to be allergic to it, you are lucky, but it's pretty clear that it didn't do much for his UTI. Sienne advises always getting a C&S (via cystocentesis) if a UTI is suspected, so that the proper antibiotic can be prescribed.

Good luck with your conversation with your vet!

Ella & Rusty
