Just Received 2 bottles of PZI

Not sure if this is Prozinc or not.
Expiration date is 3/10/12

Can anybody fill me in?

It doesnt say.
It came from a pharmacy if that means anything.

Also how important is the expiration date?

I got mine in Nov from the vet it expires 1/13.
Mine is a lime green label with a blue circle in the middle filled in with white. Small black writing inside the circle.
Keep it refrigerated of coarse.

There is a phone number on there. I guess I could call and find out.

These bottles are dark brown with a generic label that was stuck in it.
The bottle of Prozinc I that I got from my vet expires 1/20/13. Big difference from the 2 bottles I just received.
Not sure what to make of that?
 
I would call the number. Better safe then sorry. Some Pharms give generic without asking. Walmart did that to me before on a human script & I told them I didn't want generic.
 
http://www.prozinc.us/vet_login.aspx This is what a bottle/packaging of Prozinc looks like. If it is different than this, then it is NOT Prozinc. Probably some PZI insulin compounded by some pharmacy. I would only trust Prozinc made for cats or the BCP PZI from BCP Verterinary Pharmacy. Any pharmacy can take and make up an insulin and call it PZI but I wouldn't trust it.

PZI Vet was the true name of the manufactured PZI insulin by IDEXX. When they stopped making it the company that makes ProZinc took over and manufactures ProZinc. Both of these PZI insulins were manufactured to insure quality control, consistency in strength, etc. The only compounding veterinary pharmacy I would use and trust is BCP which makes PZI insulin in U-40 and U-100. Not sure if they still do a U-50 strength.

I am one for caution and would not inject my cat with any insulin so called a PZI from any local pharmacy. I also would like to know how long her cat was diabetic and what did the cat die from, how well controlled, etc. if you do call the lady who donated it.

IMHO, I would stick to the ProZinc you are using for Kitty and play it safe. One question.....are the bottles a U-40 or a U-100?

I not going to use it. Just hate to see it go to waste.
Its U-40.
 
I called the pharmacy.
The pharmacist said they are using human grade insulin. However they are adding the protamine zinc to it.

She did say there could be a variance theirs and the manufacture product.

I am wondering if I should put the bottle up in the supply closet?
 
I don't think I would. More than likely a newbie would claim it and who knows how it will work? Compounded insulin can be a real problem with few quality controls. Most people get PZI BCP (which is compounded) from a single source which has a good reputation.

It does make me wonder if it was an issue in her losing her cat? Sad possibility.

Dont know. Guess I will toss it. Perhaps by me getting it I save some poor cat from a terrible end.
