About a month or so ago I had to change Hobbs food from the discontinued Merrick's that he really liked. I switched him to Wellness which he seemed to like at first, and now, not so much. He's not refusing to eat it, he will, he just doesn't seem to like it much. He eats treats just fine and will beg for food like normal. Is he just saying that he's not too thrilled with this new food? He's never been picky except with Rx and diet food. This food is more of a pate type whereas the Merrick's was more chunky. Thoughts?

Hi there:) If you're just looking for chunkier foods, I have fed some Weruva before, and they have chunky sort of like Merrick :-D There are some that have lower carb (and lowish phosphorus since I see your kitty has CKD too) on Dr. Lisas list...but they are lower calorie so you'd have to feed more of it. Or mix it in with the Wellness  If you need the link to her list I've added it just in case: http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

Ha. You know, Weruva was what I was going to try. I actually ruled it out initially b/c it's quite a bit more expensive than Merrick's or Wellness, but if I'm throwing food away, then that's not cheaper either. I do have the list, I even have it in a spreadsheet and sorted by Carbs & Phos and printed out to bring to the store with me.

How much is he eating and is his weight low, just right, or high?

If his weight is good, and he's eating enough to maintain it, and his glucose numbers are good, the reduced appetite may indicate better control .

His weight is fine, and his numbers are fine too. He was sick a couple of weeks ago but even before then he wasn't eating this food like his previous food. I picked up some Weruva and he practically licked the bowl though.

That's good, I'm glad he liked the Weruva :-D :-D I know some of these foods get pretty pricey. I take the list to the store with me too, highlighted and all, the store workers do look at me weird

OK so Hobbs is loving the Weruva. But the lower calorie thing might be an issue. It's now almost 5AM which is when I normally get up, but I've been up for 2 hours because of him being hungry. I am not a happy kitty mama. I do not sleep well as it is. This is not helping.

So, do I feed him more? Right now I'm feeding him one 6oz can per day. He gets 1.5oz 4x day. No dry food but I'm wondering if I give him a bit of raw food to go with it if it will help? If I'm not thinking through this all the way it's b/c it's early and I'm tired.

Unregulated diabetics may need as much as 50% more food.

Adding a tablespoon of water to the food will give it more volume which may help.

If needing to do weight loss, it should be gradual.

You can work out if he is getting enough by using this formula. Its just a rough guide though so I would weigh him every couple of weeks and check he isnt losing or gaining

Required calories per day = [13.6 X ideal weight in lbs] + 70

calories are in here: http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf

That's helpful. Where does that formula come from?

The vet said he should be about 13lbs and he's around 15ish now. Which means he should be getting roughly 247 calories/day. (Jeez I can eat that in 10 minutes! Ha!) The Weruva is considerably less. But it's about the same as the Merrick's was. Is that formula based on an active cat? Hobbs is 14, he still plays, but not like he used to, and he's an only child, so there's no one but my husband to chase him around. :)

It's a really long article, and it's so easy to miss something in there. Glad we could narrow it down for you.

How is Hobbs doing today? Is he up to any mischief?

Haha, normally, yes, but he's been behaving the last couple of days. He's doing fine. He was running around this morning meowing. No idea why. Right now he's in the front room sunning himself.
