How long on average does a diabetic kitty live? Sam is 9 and doing very well. I hate to ask this question because it makes me so nervous! Thanks you guys!

Welcome, Jen! It's hard to answer that question, because some cats are diagnosed with life-threatening complications, and in other cats the diabetes is secondary to some other problem.

But for an uncomplicated case where the cat "just" has diabetes, and the owner takes precautions to make sure that the complications of hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis are unlikely, it's not at all uncommon for the cat to live for years after diagnosis. I think that 14 years may be the record on this board (Jojo's Bunny, who was diagnosed fairly young).

Please tell us more about Sam, so that we can help him join the Longevity Club!

Thank you for the replies - I really appreciate it. Sam is a one-eyed, all black, maine coon that is approx. 22 pds. I also have a b/w cat named Callie that is approx 6 pds. They are so funny when they sit together! I have never had such a big cat, and never seen a full grown cat that is as small as Callie. Thanks again guys!

Diabetic cats can live many years with proper treatment. Treatement includes a low carb/high protein diet, insulin if needed and also regulation through hometesting. By following these guidelines, unless there are other health issues, you should have many more years to spend with Sam. Also if you also feed Callie the same diet you can reduce the chances of her also developing diabetes.

Not only can they live a longer life, it is a much happier life. Tess is so much more energetic and playful than she had been in years.

oh my goodness! I'm in love with your cats! They are adorable and look at how Sam just towers over Callie! talk about size!

so which one is the diabetic? what are you doing for it?

And yes, it's a manageable, treatable disease - just like with humans - cats can live many years with this, sadly no cat can live forever, but diabetes is not a death sentence.

My Ennis is now 17 and was DX at 13 years YO. He has no plans to leave soon. He has no other conditions except a really trashy mouth.
