Just need some comments

It has been a long time since I have posted to the website. I have kept up the board. My cat is Shelby and he has been insulin free for 6 years now due to help from this board!! Just would like some comments on my questions. Shelby delveloped a bladder infection Sunday evening and I began giving him antibiotics on Monday from the vet. Shelby is now about 13-14 years of age and is insulin controlled through his diet. Now would a bladder infection cause his glucose levels to rise or is he starting to look like he will be needing to go back on the insulin in time. Here is the curve I did.

1-17

9:00 pm - 95
11:30 pm - 92
2:30 am - 130
7:00 am - 112
9:30 am - 86
12:00 noon - 95

He has usually been reading in the high 60s to low 70s. Just would like some comments to my questions. Does anyone use the Mellit drops I looked into on the internet as a herbal supplement instead of insulin when running this low on readings? I thought maybe purchasing this product.

Thank you.

Hi Nancy,
Yes, a bladder infection (any infection) can cause a rise in BG. Especially if it causes any pain or stress which will also elevate BG. I would keep an eye on the numbers and continue with the antibiotics until the infection clears. Hopefully as that happens, the numbers will go back down. All the numbers you listed are still in the "normal" range, however.

agree with carl in that infection and the discomfort they bring can raise BG levels. as the infection clears i would expect the numbers to start coming back down perhaps. the numbers you have, while higher than what you are used to, aren't high enough to warrant insulin at this point so i would just watch them for the next several days as the infection is treated and see what they do.

I agree, they don't look like a cat needing insulin, just one needing ab's that happen to raise his bg some. Decide when that clears.
