I am keeping a log for sure. she is getting two units of lantus every 12 hrs. Ill do the 3hr tomorrow and then 7 hr and report it back here. How long do you normally keep her on fluids with the bag included when she is at vet? How long have any of your kittes stayed awaybfrom home with dka? she was at er for almost three days on that and anti nausea meds.

She ate alot of new food i just got tnight, prime filets beef gravy
Sorry if this is a repeat, you can also add 1 or 2 Tablespoons of warm/ room temp water to each meal to help give her some extra fluids :). I consider Friskies prime filets a medium carb food so it might not impact her numbers too much, but every cat is different .

Ill give her some more before bed in 2hrs with warm water. she bathed herself for first time tnight since she has been home,a good sign for sure

When my cat got sick with DKA, with my vet's OK, we chose to get everything we needed from the vet and take care of him at home. My husband and I are both RNs and have experience taking care of people with DKA, so I kinda knew the drill. I used the subQ fluids for 1 week, and had to syringe feed completely for 1 week around the clock. By the second week, he was eating, but still tired. He was pretty much back to normal by 3 weeks. He hasn't had any episodes of DKA since and it's been about 2 year or so.

Thats good!! im surprised she is eating more, just hope she keeps it up. i just started home testing, wonder what her numbers were all this time ?

Ok i tested her 4hrs after her lantus shot, lantus doesnt really hit untill 6 to 8 hrs from what i understand. she read 423. but she seems to be feeling well. i pricked her good, still bleeding after 5 min, grrr

So glad you've found a food she likes so much! And that she seems to be feeling well!

Ouch! Sounds like you probably hit the big vein-- it happens occasionally. Maybe avoid that ear for a little while if you can, it'll take a bit longer than usual to heal and might bruise a bit-- if you haven't already, it'd be good to dab a bit of neosporin/polysporin ointment on the spot to help it alone. And, generally, on every poke, applying a little pressure (with a tissue) to the poke helps stop bleeding and reduce bruising.

Hope you guys had an uneventful night and that she's continuing to improve! When you get a chance, it would be good at this point to start setting up a spreadsheet for her numbers-- it will help to figure out whether her insulin dose is the right one for her and to try to get her into consistently good numbers. Instructions here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/ , just holler if you need help!

Great job on first test! :bighug:Might have accidentally hit the vein. Just firmly hold the poked spot for as long as you can to stop the bleeding and reduce bruising.

Looking so much better!

So sorry to hear about your kitty and glad to hear that she is feeling better. With DKA, the calories are of utmost importance to help reverse the condition (with insulin and fluids). If kitty is still not eating enough calories, you should consider syringe feeding the rest. My Ozzy had a bad case of DKA and was hospitalized for 4 days and almost didn't make it. He barely ate at all in the hospital and ate very little when he came home. The folks on this site taught me the importance of syringe feeding to make sure he got enough calories. We would let him eat what he would on his own and then syringed him the rest. I can't stress how important getting the right amount of calories in is. Please make sure your kitty is eating enough.

I'm so happy to hear you are home testing and ketone testing. The ear pokes definitely get easier over time and you and your kitty will get used to it. When I ketone test Ozzy, I just sneak up on him in the litter box and stick the strip under his bum. I recall the first time I did it (even posted a funny post about it) and was so surprised how easy it was. It was like my first little victory of something finally being 'easy' because everything up to this point had been so difficult.

We always add extra water to both our kitties food now. Ozzy for the most part has had negative ketone tests but every once in awhile we get a 'trace' result and we up the water and it goes back to negative. Ozzy just had DKA at the end of November so just a few months ago. We tested for ketones frequently in the beginning and now try to get in at least 1 test a week to make sure all is well.

Praying for you and your kitty and hoping she gets better soon! It took Ozzy about 2 whole weeks to look like he was feeling better again, but he was a very very sick kitty!

Wonderful wonderful update!!! Thank you for sharing! Sounds like you took great care of her! We love hearing success stories after DKA and this is a true success! :bighug::bighug:

I was thinking of going to my vet this week and getting some hills or purina hard food just to have on hand,im going to try to get her back on pates and ff classics this week also. she is so picky lol. what brand would you all recommend, hills or purina kibble?

Fluids are relatively inexpensive-- I don't know off the top of my head (someone else might have recent experience) but I'd say it would probably be somewhere in the low-mid tens of $$$, especially if you were just getting the supplies and doing it yourself at home. It's a really common at-home treatment, lots of folks around here do it.
I just bought a bag of fluids a setup tubing and 10 needles total 23 dollars.

Neither of those would be good options for diabetic cats-- they are too high in carbs. The only two kibbles that are low enough in carbs are Evo cat+kitten and Young Again Zero (only available online, but they will send you a free sample to try before you commit). We don't generally recommend dry food for a variety of health reasons (see here for why), but those two can be very helpful backups to have around and use as a supplement to the everyday diet of pates!

Good luck getting rid of spiders! What a crazy thing to happen...

thx ill call them tomorrow to see if they can send me a sample. just fed her pm wet food, she threw up lol. guess i wont be getting that kind .

Is there a wet food that she will eat? You might try just giving her just a couple teaspoons of a new food instead of letting her make a meal of it. Then let her meal be whatever she is used to eating. Then if she seems to like the new food, you can slowly start giving her more at subsequent feedings. Some kitties have very sensitive stomachs when it comes to change.

Yea she is eating high calorie wet food now,im trying to get her back on her diabetic diet. she does have a sensative stomach

Getting her back on her regular food. wonder if i should get a dm bag of dry food incase we have an eating incedent again?

Can i buy them myself or do i need a script from dr if i buy online? she really gobbled up some new food tnight. she even begged for it lol.

Young Again is only available online. I think EVO kitten is available at PetSmart. No Rx required. YA will even send a free sample about the size of an average treat packet. :)

I looked on the website for a free sample,or is that something you have to call in and ask for?

I just emailed them, gonna get some evo kitten too. does it have to be kitten? purple bag? ill go today

Yes, that is the lowest carb one by them. I think it's around 8%. Purina ProPlan DM is 18% which is a bit high for diabetic kitties. :)

Have any of you had any luck finding this at the store? if you ship it,whats easier, ship to store or your home?
