hi,
the past few days, my 10 year old cat went from being completely fine to really really sick. he never had any history of being sick and we feed him the healthy, raw expensive meat mixed with canned pumpkin (we were told its really good for them). anyways, 3 days ago, he vomited, had diarrhea, was dehydrated and seemed sick and sleepy, the next day he was the same only worse. constantly was drinking water, would not eat at all, was extremely weak and even though i would put water right next to him he would still walk to the kitchen to get his water.. however he would be very wobbly and would take at least 3 breaks to sit and rest before continuing to walk to the kitchen. we took him to the vet that day and they gave us fluid to give him ourselves to keep him hydrated and gave us diarrhea medicine. However he refused to eat that day. Later that night the vet called back and said he ran his urine and our cat definitely has diabetes. we decided to take him to the vet that next morning because we couldn't afford to take him to the emergency again. that whole night, he seemed to get worse. his eyes looked sick and a bit pink, he was just as wobbly, dehydrated, and still could not really walk well. this morning we took him to the vet right as they opened and they said they were going to keep him there for 3 days on IV fluids, give him insulin, medicine, feed him, check his blood, etc. After reading about Ketones, I also think that he has this.
He's been there all day and is there right now for his first night and I am just really scared if he won't make it through the night and just how he is doing.
I know there isn't anything for me to do right now but wait and hear from the vet in the morning but i am just really worried and i can't stop thinking about how he is so im wondering if any of you had any similar situations that happened to your cat and if they got better?

If he is in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA0, it will depend on how severe it is. DKA can cause electrolyte imbalances, and fat breakdown for calories can overwhelm the liver and cause hepatic lipidosis on top of DKA.

They have to push fluids to help flush out the ketones, possibly supplement with electrolytes such as potassium, and balance insulin and glucose to give him nutrition.

With diligent care and catching it early, he may be able to survive this.

Good luck.

Aww...I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty! The good news is that he is where he needs to be - getting medical care. Ketones are much less common in cats than people. If your cat were in ketosis, your vet would probably have urged you to take him to an emergency or at least 24 hour care vet even with the $$$ concerns. If he is not in ketosis, it is also possible that dehydration affected his kidney function and electrolytes (temporarily), which can cause weakness. I know it doesn't help to tell you to try not to worry - I am such a worrier too. Every time one of my pets gets sick, I end up with migraines. Fluids and insulin can do wonders. They may also let you come visit him during the day.
