Elvis was diagnosed a week ago, and this is only the second time I've gotten a reading from her.
A week ago: 525 in the vet's office.
Prescribed 2 units of Lantus, twice a day
Wednesday: 310 in the morning (she had eaten a small amount of food a hour earlier, and just before testing)
And now, 7 hours after her morning shot: 94.

So I don't know what she was at this morning. I'm worried that I may not be able to get another bg tonight. (Though I think I was successful just now because I just bought different lancets, and spent a really long time warming her ears while she slept.)
What do I do if I can't get a reading? Skip her shot tonight?
And if I do get a reading, how high would it have to be in order for me to shoot tonight?

For new members, since you don't have any data on Elvis yet, we suggest no shot under 200 unless you have someone here that's able to watch over you as long as necessary (and of course you also have to be able to test as often as necessary)

But just because she's at 94 now doesn't mean she won't go much higher by shot time. That's why testing is so important!

In addition to what Chris posted, there is information in the post I'm linking on what to do when you cat is in low numbers either at shot time or during the cycle. Please keep in mind that especially the section on shooting low numbers is relevant if you are following the Tight Regulation Protocol. The section on low numbers during the cycle is more generic.

I would really encourage you to keep working at getting test data. Ironically, the more you try to test the easier it gets. The capillary bed in your cat's ears will begin to build up and it will be easier to get blood when you poke. Testing is the best way to keep your kitty safe!

Ok, just got another test - I am not good at this & Elvis is getting frustrated - she is lower. 87 now, 11 1\2 hours after her morning shot

I'm not going to give her an evening shot

Could you start keeping track of your numbers on our special spreadsheet? It is a really valuable tool that we will want to see before we give much in the way of advice in the future.

Generally though, if you're getting a Pre-Shot that's too low to shoot, it's because the dose is too high.

Here are Instructions on starting the spreadsheet but if you have trouble with it, let us know so we can help!
