Just diagnosed with Diabetes.

Hello! My name is Rejane and my 11 years old male Maine coon, Simba, was diagnosed yesterday with diabetes. This morning I went to the vet again to learn how to give him insulin. She prescribed Lantus, 2ml twice a day. I am in the US and I'm shocked with the price of insulin. Can anyone please give me some directions on where I can find Lantus in a more affordable price? Most of us here test our cat's blood glucose at home using a human meter. We test before each shot and periodically between shots. We record our reading and other info in a spreadsheet. See:

I do have a human meter myself (my mother and all her side of the family is diabetic so I worry about it) but I am not sure I want to track his level right now. I'm thinking of giving at least a month once I'm able to give the insuline and the test done. Until now, I was feeding him a dry prescription from Hills (Metabolic) and Friskies as the wet one. I will check on the link you gave me for the options of low carb wet ones as he prefers wet. Vet recomended prescription Purina DM.

If you vet prescribed a vial of insulin, ask for a prescription for the pens instead. With vials the insulin will become ineffective long before you can use all of it There are 5 pens in a package and you will use them like mini vials. But since they are in smaller containers you will be able to use almost all of the insulin. Depending on your dose, one package of pens can last 9 - 10 months

Clarifying here. Insulin is dosed in units, not mL. One mL of Lantus contains 100 units, hence the designation U-100.
I believe you mean you are giving 2 units, every 12 hours.

If you are planning to switch over to an exclusively wet diet from a combination of dry and wet, that alone could cause a dramatic drop of Simba's BG and that could mean that his dose of insulin might need to be reduced. To keep Simba safe, we strongly recommend that you home test if making a diet change while giving insulin.
