Tiger was diagnosed today with glucose level at 456. He hasn't eaten in 3 days now. He was severely dehydrated. The vet did a complete blood panel and said the only thing he was concerned with is the glusose level. He started him on 2 units of Prozinc 2 times daily. He gave him fluid bubbles in 2 places and his first insulin shot today. He said with the level being so high he wanted me to go ahead and give him the shots tomorrow even if he is still not eating. He thinks once we get the fluids back in and the level down that he should start eating. I am still worried that he is not eating. He looks bad and has no energy. We take him back to the vet Friday to check his level and if he is doing any better. This is all a bit overwelming and any advice would be appreciated.

Did the vet check for the presence of ketones? He has to eat, even if you have to syringe feed him watered down food. He could quickly develop fatty liver disease by not eating. Friday is too far away, and if you can't get him to eat by tomorrow morning, I would take him back to the vet. Three days without food is very dangerous. He may need to be hospitalized and fed through a feeding tube.

Also, 2u of prozinc is a pretty high dose with him not eating, but lowering the dose can also cause problems.

I'm guessing your vet is not having you check his blood glucose levels at home?

I would definitely bring him back in tomorrow morning.

Ask your vet specifically about ketoacidosis and hepatic lipidosis. Both of those conditions can be fatal.

I am going back to the vet tomorrow to get something to help him eat. His ketones were not that bad he said. His kidneys were ok, also. I just need to get him to eat. He said if I felt comfortable testing at home that would be good, but most people he has dealt with didn't want to. I told him to let me get good at giving the insulin and then I would tackle the testing. I have been feeding Tiger Fancy Feast Classic (not seafood) already. He was eating until a few days ago so I'm not sure why he quit eating. The vet said he just is so dehydrated and his sugar was so high he just doesn't feel like eating.

after reading more posts on here I am going to buy a meter tomorrow to do home testing. Hope I can do it, but I think it will be better for Tiger. If only I could get him to eat.

Great move on buying the meter - most people use Walmart's Relion Confirm, Micro or the new Prime.
Strips are the cheapest.

It takes a while to get setup - buying all of the supplies - make sure you get an irresistable treat (low-carb of course) and then practice a bit on yourself - have a glass of wine as your low carb treat

Then its just practice, practice, practice - at first, it will be tricky. I hated it for the 1st week - dreaded it. I couldn't get blood, my cat tried to hide and I didn't think I'd ever get it right.
Then, all of a sudden, it clicked - now I'm ok with it and she's ok too - sometimes, if during the night, she doesn't even wake up!

You can do it!! :thumbup

I had to take Tiger back to the vet this morning, because he was still not eating and seemed to be weaker. They have him there now on IV. His sugar went from 456 to 350, so he said we are making progress. He is still severely dehydrated, though. I am praying my little guy pulls through this.
