Just diagnosed today

Hello everyone, I come to you with many questions. Feline Diabetes is new to me. My boy, Tommy is 10 years old. Was diagnosed today with a Glucose of 305. Vet (who is old school) put him on 1 unit of Vetsulin once daily. We will recheck the BG in one week. He said to give insulin when Tom has eaten a meal. How soon after the meal do you give? Immediately when he has finished? What type of food is best? He is currently eating canned FF. Turkey, Chicken and Beef. Is this ok? Vet said to feed canned, but did not specify which brand. I looked up online and see he needs to eat low carbs/high protein. Also high in arginine and high in L-Carnitine. Can you tell me some brands that are good? I also once in a while feed kibble and I know Young Again Zero is carb free. Not sure on the protein though. Is this ok? Is there any additional supplements that you recommend? Thank you so much!
