Just Curious - How Often are UTI's Associated with FD?

Early this morning, Casper was yowling up a storm. He's typically an extremely quiet cat - not talkative at all so I knew something was up.

He tried using the litter box several times when I was getting ready in the bathroom. I saw him squat, but nothing came out. It also seemed he was trying to poo also, but again nothing.

He had several instances of heading to the box to try to urinate. My partner saw a very small amount. Very little came out of him.

He has had a couple of instances of UTI in the past but it's been at least a couple years since he had one. I think it is too coincidental to his diabetes diagnosis not to be linked. He's currently on 1 unit Vestsulin, twice a day. He has not be drinking too much (he was prior to the medication), and his eating has been normal for him.

I called the vet first thing and we're bringing him in later today but I am curious how many of you have had concurrent UTI's with this illness?

He was only very recently diagnosed, so I wonder if it was brewing all along. It's possible we didn't notice he was having any problem using the box until this morning when it became very apparent.
Vet tonight, so at least we'll get him fixed up fast!
 
My male diabetic had never had a UTI in 14 years. Since being diagnosed with FD (20months) he has had 4 UTIs. My girlie diabetic had never had a UTI in 15 years. Since being diagnosed (4 1/2 months) she has had 2 UTI's

The excessive glucose in the urine provides a perfect "breeding ground" for bacteria.

If he has a UTI that can also cause the glucose numbers to be higher as it can with any sort of infection.

Sorry to hear both of your kitties have developed UTI's due to FD. I guess this will be another thing we need to keep an eye out for too! Glad our vet is easy to access - they are now open Sundays also which is so incredibly helpful.

It's good that he will be seeing the vet today. A UTI can be very serious in nutered male cats. They can get a blockage that can cause kidney damage.

Our Callie had a UTI just 2 weeks after her FD diagnosis. It sent her numbers sky high. We are now trying to get her insulin dose worked out with all the ups and downs from the UTI.

It could be that his aggression is particularly due to the UTI making him feel so bad on top of the FD.
 
If your vet is on board he may give you a AB to have on hand--
I have azithromycin on hand because when Dre gets a UTI it is so fast-he is fine then Bam he has a UTI-
Most recently to was form the baby sitter dose and hm being too high-sugar spilling over like crazy :(
My vet also knows I pay very close attention to him --Dre can not tolerate clavamox --
He will be getting D Mannose 2-3 x a week as prevention after the AB-
 
Saw vet last night. Managed to cut out of work early to get him over as soon as I could.
His bladder was empty and felt normal when we got there. I guess he managed to void himself while we weren't home. Which is good but I would have preferred if she had been able to get a sample.
Since he had just had an ultrasound less than a month ago, she was pretty sure there were no blockages because they would have shown up at that time. No crystals were on the report, nothing.
Gave him a long acting antibiotic and that was that for now. We already have a follow up scheduled in 1-1/2 weeks so hopefully this will nip whatever it was in the bud.
He seems fine today, ate really well at breakfast; in fact better than he has in a while. Thanks again for the advice everyone!
 
Glad he's feeling better. Did they give him an antibiotic shot or pills?

They gave him the antibiotic as an injection. Much easier for us. He's a good, easy going cat except when it comes to pilling. Just did NOT want to go there LOL.

the shots are sooooo much easier. after a day my cats all know my "hide it in the ham" trick. haha
