Hi all
Just checking in..
For the past few weeks Tiggy's been doing great with maintaining his blood glucose off insulin. He's recently been mostly greens and only a couple of blues! 5/22/15 - AMBg = 86; PMBg = 56; 5/21/15 - AMBg =96; PMBg =75; 5/20/15 - AMBg = 96; PMBg =88; 5/19/15 - AMBg =96; PMBg =76; 5/18/15 - AMBg =89; PMBg =69; 5/17/15 AMBg = 96; PMBg = 92; 5/16/15 - AMBg =96; PMBg =72; 5/15/15- AMBg=98; PMBg =82, etc.
So, it seems the change in diet has made a huge impact for him. I've took the great advice I got here as well in purchasing one of those automatic "feeders" and finally got Tigz trained to use this.

Tiggy is a bit of a scaredy cat and initially didn't like the noise the feeder made as it moved when the timer indicated it was time to feed him and his non-diabetic bro, Boo. I had to coerce Tiggy by putting his fav low-carb "treat" inside the bowl so he would come and eat at the bowl. Once he got the hang of it, he decided he liked this and ended up sitting on-top of the automatic feeder and staring at the bowl waiting for it to move, as it appeared he thought he'd get another treat! He does the same thing both when I get up in the AM and when I arrive home at night, in that he jumps on top of his "special wicker stool" where I standardly do his blood glucose testing. After his testing, he gets a low-carb "treat" for being a good boy and sitting so nicely for mommy. He is a very quick learner when it comes to his "treats"! LOL

I still do have left over dry food, which I didn't want to just throw away and waste good money and good cat food, even if it is dry cat food. So, I am feeding the dry food to a little feral kitty that has been hanging around outside my home. My kitties are both strictly indoor cats and don't go outside at all. I feel a little guilty for feeding the feral kitty dry food (as opposed to canned), however, I did try to feed the feral kitty some canned food, but she didn't seem interested in it.

I found out that this feral kitty has been fixed as her ear has been clipped (to indicate she was fixed). When I first saw her ear, I thought she had gotten her ear mangled by some machinery. Yikes! But a neighbor of mine works with a cat rescue and informed me that this is what is done to feral cats when they get fixed. This neighbor had found this feral kitty and her newly born kittens to the rescue shelter where she works. The kittens ended up being adopted, and the feral mother kitty was fixed. But the feral mother kitty was found to be non-adoptable as the shelter felt she was not "people friendly", as she kept hissing, spitting and trying to claw at people. I am assuming this is because she was very very scared when she and her kittens were captured and taken to the shelter. Thus, she was returned to the area where she was first rescued from after she was fixed.

I personally think it depends on the people feral cats are around as this feral kitty is super sweet and friendly toward me. Go figure!! I already have two indoor kitties, (especially one who has diabetes and asthma), so I can only keep her and feed her outside my home. I think she is happier outside anyway as she really won't come inside anyway. I've started to call her "Peanut", because she's still so tiny. She still looks like a kitten, even though she is approximately 2 years old. My neighbor who works at the rescue shelter seems to think she is still so tiny because she was malnourished as a kitten. She's very cute and knows exactly how to get my attention when she wants food. In the morning, she will bang my screen door against my sliding glass door on my patio to make noise to get my attention that she is sitting on my patio...waiting oh, so patiently for her food..She also greets me on the walkway near my driveway and walks with me up to my front door. She will then go around to the back once I go into my front door and then go around to the back patio to sit by her food and water bowls to be fed. Oh my, I think I'm starting to become a "crazy cat lady"..LOL
Hope everyone is doing well...

Great to get a Tigz update. He's doing awesome! :D It is kind of funny to watch how they react to their auto feeders. Neko ran away the first couple of times, and now it's her best friend.

Sorry no one got to you earlier, but I guess it's been pretty busy with the long weekend.
It looks like Tigz successfully made it through the 14 days that we consider to be an OTJ trial - so congratulations. :otj:

We have some standard OTJ instructions, and since you don't need the trial instructions, I'm just posting the post trial part:

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Wonderful update!

ChrisFarley was the same way with the autofeeder. Was terrified and ran away at first, now he'll go from a dead sleep into a sprint when one of those moves. Funny kitties.

Its wonderful you are feeding the outside kitty. She does not sound feral at all. Just didn't like being confined apparently.

Thanks so much!
Good to get the info RE: details for being off insulin. I wasn't exactly sure when to consider him OTJ. I wasn't sure if he had to hit 14 or more days straight in all green, or if having a couple of blues was okay.

I've continued doing his AMBg & PMBg testing as it didn't seem to bother him much since he knows he will get a treat! It is kind of a pain for me especially on weekend AM's when I want to sleep in!
And, now that he is used to the automatic feeder, Tigz can happily eat and mommy can sleep in! Yahoo!

And, there is definitely no way I would change his diet unless something else changes regarding his health as he likes the canned food he's been getting and seems back to his usual happy, playful, chatty, chirpy self. Considering he's 15 yrs old, he's doing very good!! His non-diabetic bro, Boo, will eat anything. He has also lost weight as well eating this new low-carb diet, which is good as although he was non-diabetic, he was starting to look a little like a black, fluffy, "jabba-the-hut".. (Star Wars reference).. Lol!

And, as for Peanut, (my sweet little feral kitty). I gave her some toys to play with (rolly balls, etc), which were basically hand-me downs from Tiggy and Boo (my 2 indoor cats). We had a conversation and they "agreed" to share some of their non-fav toys with Peanut. Lol

Peanut spent a better part of the morning playing on my patio with the toys and having a great time! She is soooo cute!
Thanks again for all the great feedback

What a great Tigz report!!

When China was diagnosed, all my cats went on low carb canned food too and they all lost their extra "fluffiness" too.....They're now much healthier weights and a lot less likely to ever become diabetic!

How sweet of your kitties to share their toys with Peanut! Sounds like you've made a friend!

Thank you! I'm thrill my Tiggy has done so well and I appreciate all the great support / advice from everyone here with getting him OTJ. Without everyone's support here, I'm sure he wouldn't be doing as well as he has been. I'm extremely grateful to everyone.

And, I think I'm the one who's lucky that Peanut decided to adopt me as watching her play brings me great joy (in addition to the joy and love my own indoor babies bring me). Somehow, animals do seem drawn to me (or at least the food and toys I give them)..lol.

In addition to my little feral kitty Peanut, there is also a little squirrel who likes to "visit" as well. I've taken to calling this little visitor, "Lefty", as this squirrel appears to have a bum right hand. I assumed the squirrel got it caught in something?! Not sure..

About the time I was crying and generally feeling sorry for myself (about having to wear another cast on my right arm for another 4 months due to a 2nd surgery), Lefty appeared. At first he/she liked to sit (and sleep) on the top of my fence. Then, Lefty started to venture on to my patio. I noticed that He/She? always waited until Peanut had her fill of her dry food, then Lefty coyly made his/her way down to Peanut's food bowl and would drink some of her water from her water bowl, in addition to nibbling some of her dry kitty food. Once Lefty had his/her fill, he/she then checks out the plants on my patio prior to zipping back to the fence to take a nap in the sun, then off into a tree. Peanut never tries to chase Lefty either. Peanut just watches Lefty nibbling away, but never tries to catch her. Go figure!

Tiggy and Boo are very used to seeing Peanut on my patio. However, whenever Tigz and Boo, see Lefty thru the patio sliding glass door, they both chatter and chirp away. I can only imagine they are both "telling" me that they would like a little "closer look" at Lefty! Lol
Happy Memorial Day to all!

Congratulations on being OTJ!
