My boy had lost a kilo in weight and after having a blood test on friday it was confirmed this morning that he has problems with his kidneys. Am off to the vets shortly to get some tablets but before I go I firstly need to stop crying and secondly wanted to know how everyone else gets on with a diabetic cat with kidney problems? My vet advised that he had 50-60% loss in function. I don't know how bad that is as have read on line that they can survive ok with just 30% function? Is that right? I know I will ask my vets these questions, but what do I now need to feed him, how will this effect his diabetes, am I being selfish by keeping him on tablets and insulin - is that fair to him? I know I don't want to let him go but can't be selfish if he is in pain or suffering. Any advice?

There are other caregivers here with cats that are diabetic and have CRF. It's manageable.

Sue gave you a great link to Tanya's CRF site already.

It would be good to know what "Stage" the CRF is considered to be. Then you go from there.

I managed a non-diabetic CRF kitty, for 2 years with some medications and then sub-q fluids. It's easy to learn how to give sub-q fluids at home if needed and we have a great video by Marje and Gracie showing you how to do that.

My vet told me that one of their patients cats lived to be 21 years old after being treated for CRF for several years. I remember the guy too. He used to bring the kitty in for subQ fluids several times a week when I was taking in my diabetic cat Lilly(GA) several years ago. Sending many prayers and blessings for you and your kitty.
