Julius is 48 after over 24hrs with no insulin... my concern is he keeps dropping, I just fed him and he ate.... going to test in about 15 mins. advice? if he is 40 or lower I am going to give him honey.....
Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
If he has had no insulin, he can't hypo. He just might like the 40s normally.....I'd just feed him. I'm not sure you need to give him any honey; again, if he's not had insulin in 24 hours, he's not hypoing.
Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
That's quite a drop from 48 hours ago!
I know that kitties not getting insulin don't hypo, but given that drop, I think you're doing the right thing. Feed a little, then test, until you see Julius stop dropping.
Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
getting ready to test..... thanks for the assurance, I will keep you posted update he is 60 now..... what do you think this means?? his pancreas is kicking in?
Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
Like Marjorie and Kathy have said, with no insulin on board, there's nothing to cause a hypo. At this point, his shed is pretty depleted, as well.
What you're probably seeing is Julius' pancreas at work. When you feed, the pancreas released insulin to help move nutrients (glucose) into the cells. Julius is producing endogenous insulin which is a good thing.

Totally understand but it is LL etiquette to take the icon off once your question has been answered. I know that number is scary but everything is ok now; you did a great job checking in but whenever someone sees that icon, they'll want to help and all is ok now. Congrats that Julius is doing so well!!
Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
yay!!! Pancreas got jealous of all the attention you were giving that little vial in the fridge, thought it'd try to do something about it. Throw pancreas a party!! woo!

Re: Julius has had no insulin in 24 hrs and he is down to 48
thank you for all the input he is at 92 this morning!! He didn't eat a lot but I am thinking maybe his pancreas kicking into gear is making him feel a little funny. I could tell he was low last nite before I tested him because he was laying in the spare bedroom with 'that look' on his face. I am going to test him again before I go to work.... I hope this is a sign of things to come for him! flip_cat

Tiffany:
Since it looks like Julius has decided it's time for an OTJ trial as of 3/18, here are the instructions for the trial (courtesy of Libby):
Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
Remember to open a new condo every day and post your AMBG and PMBG or any other test you feel like getting. Good luck with the trial!
