Juggie’s poop is black

Update - called the vet. He said it could be change in diet or stress and we should grab a stool softener and monitor. If it’s still dark in a few days to come in

Hi guys, so just now Juggie came into the bathroom when I was in it. His tummy was gurgling while he found his poop spot. After he pooped I noticed it was dark grey/black and soft. Still poop shaped but a bit got on his paws while covering it up so I really noticed the colour when he walked on the floor and left dark tracks. He’s been eating and drinking like normal, only eating fancy feast pate ( not new to him as that has always been our go to soft food but he used to get friskies kibble as well before diagnosis). He seems normal, alert, walking about, sitting in window people watching, doing all his fav activities. I’m not sure if this black poop is new or not as he always buried it but I’ve never seen poop marks on the floor. The only change is taking the Lantus and the huge stress of trying unsuccessfully to get blood glucose readings. Oh, he was outside today and munched a lot of grass but that’s never given him dark poop before. Any advice or been there done that’s?

Mind you I am only guessing, But when Magellan went from kibble to pate his stools also changed much like that. I figured it was due to the increased protein in his diet. You might also notice an increased stink factor to his stools as well as his urine. If he continues with loose poops you might want to a a bit of pumpkin puree. Not the pie mix as it has sugar and spices that are not so good for him.

thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve never heard of using pumpkin, gonna go google :)

no. It was fully dark, reminded me of soft clay but darker
 
Black poops can mean old blood and can mean there is bleeding higher up the bowel. My cats have black poops but they eat a raw diet. I would mention it to the vet or collect a specimen and have it tested for blood just to be in the safe side

I called the vet today. He mentioned old blood. Said to monitor his poo for the next few days and suggested if constipation continues ( I said he had a Gurgle tummy and was grunting when he pooped) to stop by and get a stool softener. I will monitor and go from there.
