Juggie has his dental surgery in the am & I’m stressed

Please send all the good vibes you can spare, tomorrow is the big day for my Juggers, at his dental exam they estimate he needs 14 teeth pulled. :nailbiting:

he gets dropped off at 8am (about 8.5 hours from now) and I will pick him up after work at 4:30 (they want to keep him the day to monitor so the timing works good)

Although I am stressed to the limit I will say I feel that our vet hospital is top notch! They will be doing absolutely everything imaginable to keep him safe during his surgery. Some info in my head right now,
  • Assuming his tests and blood work come back fine he will be getting metacam, (if any issues or irregularities they will give bupe). I know many here have an issue with metacam but I spoke in great length with our vet and also with vets at some other clinics and the issues in the USA are not world wide issues (I’m in Canada) and I have made peace with my decision.
  • I spoke with the dental tech who will be doing his surgery, she has 30+ years and has done quite a few surgeries on diabetic cats.
  • the owner will be the lead vet and she was an associate in the vet med anesthesia department for many years at our university.
  • They will be doing his full blood work and X-rays pre-op
  • Propofol anesthetic Injection + gas
  • He will be intubated and they will also run an iv
  • I believe they said his temp will be stabilized with warm air ??
  • They will call if anything comes up, otherwise will call to update when done
Daughter gave him his PM insulin, as I worked late and she gave him 2U instead of 2.5. His +3 was 347 :( , +4 was 292 I hate high numbers they cause me added stress :(

I used to take a blood pressure med with the uncommon side effect of dry mouth. The day finally came when I had to have exactly fourteen teeth pulled and I was told once they start they may as well keep on going. That barely translates to a cat but I've also been where you are now, pacing back and forth waiting for the call from my vet about my baby boy Nigel, our first sugar cat. He came home safe and sound as I'm sure little Juggers will.
Because of an enlarged heart Noah couldn't be put under so for the next 2+ years he lived with a mouthful of rotten teeth. We got through that with transdermal BUPE. It never affected his numbers and he managed the stairs just fine. I have issues with pain and doctors who deny it.

Transdermal BUPE
Noah Strength 0.16mg/0.1ml. Dose 0.05ml twice daily.
Andy Strength 0.16mg/0.1ml. Dose 0.05ml Every 8 to 12 hours as needed. (broke his leg in two places, the 'as needed' part was up to me and there were days when I doubled his dose)
 
Little update while I’m in my break,

at drop off a big dog came in and started barking and scared the heck out of Juggie. Poor think was hissing and growling and really just inconsolable so bad start to it all.

about 15 min after drop off the vet called and said Juggie was still highly agitated and stressed and asked permission to sedate him with gas so they could do his pre-op exams and lab work. She was concerned at is elevated stress effecting his numbers. I gave her the go ahead

she called back after pre-op exams and said Juggie was chill and happy (I picture him high as a kite) and they got everything done. She said all tests came back great except his bg was very high. She also said his mouth was terrible and he will definitely lose at least 14, that a lot had already fallen out over time and one of his canines fell out in her hand during examination

just got the call!! He’s all done and awake and doing great. They did have to pull 14 and he has about 4 teeth left . One canine as one fell out and other two were in unsalable state. My heart is broken and I feel such deep guilt at causing him unintentional pain but I’m trying to focus on the positives and how going forward from this point will be a much better quality of life for Jughead.
 
Thanks for the update Dena, I'm so glad everything went well. I'm sure they are sending you home with pain meds. I hope he recovers quickly , give him a big kiss for me , keep us updated please :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat:

Just think about how much better Juggie's mouth is going to feel after he heals. You did the right thing. :bighug: Get lots of soft and purreed foods in for him to eat. In Canada I haven't found pure meat baby food, but many of the cat food vendors sell things like mousse's or liquid treats that he could have at first (not long term). Tikicat Mousse might be one.

Thank you! I am so relieved he is ok. They will be going over the whole surgery and all that when I pick him up and yes he gets pain relief too. I’ll be sure to update after he’s home. Oh, Juggie is the grey one. The orange one is his brother Jack who will be next to visit the dentist and i don’t think his mouth is as damaged (fingers crossed)

I am trying to just focus on exactly that instead of beating myself up. Do you think I could just use his ff pate if I add water and blend into soup? Or should I buy an already made mousse?
 
You can try his FF blended up. I bought a cheap immulsion blender just for Neko and turned her food into a mousse. If he's not feeling well after the surgery a treat or something different might be enough to peak his interest in eating.
 
He’s home!!

he is a tiny bit wobbly and I’m sure the pain meds are still in effect, but otherwise great. Vet said he didn’t eat all day so he was ravenous once we got home. He’s quite pissed that I’m only feeding him small portions but vet said to do so to ensure he doesn’t vomit from anesthesia. She said to give him 1/3 the food he’d normally get for rest of today and if he eats give him insulin

he has 4 days worth of pain meds and 10 days worth of antibiotics. We go back in a week for a checkup. Jack was quite insistent on checking Juggie out and didn’t like his smell but didn’t get aggressive or anything but we will still keep him separate for sleep time.

I mushed it with a spoon and added some water and he gobbled it all up and is pissed I won’t give him more
