Poor guy has not been able to shake this UTI.

Back at the vet yesterday. He got an antbiotic shot and was changed from Baytril to Amoxxillin. 10 days. He is better but just can't seem to throw it completely off. Vet feels like this will do the trick. I hope so. I want my kitty feeling good again.

his sugar is good-he has stopped drinking large amounts of water and as a result is urinating smaller amounts. the entire crew of 6 is now on a canned diet forever- no more dry for them!

I sometimes wonder if flushing out the bladder with a disinfecting or antibiotic solution would help in treating a resistant bladder infection. I've a friend whose mom has been colonized with something antibiotic resistant, and they haven't found a way to clear it from her system, so she repeatedly gets bladder infections.

Has the vet had it cultured to find out exactly what bacteria is causing the UTI? My Jesse James had recurrent UTI's after a blockage, and we weren't able to clear it until it was identified and the correct antibiotic (in this case, Clavamox) prescribed. He was also on the antibiotic for an extended time (at least 30 days, IIRC).

No but I'm going to suggest it if we have to go back. He is in pain and has blood in his urine again this afternoon. I'm worried we are headed for an emergency visit if he isn't better in the morinng- something has to give soon! I am so frustrated and stressed over this!

are you adding water to his canned food? extra water at this point will dilute the burning from the urine and help him be a little more comfy. poor guy.

culturing the urine so the right AB is used is a very smart idea.

I've been adding water to the rx canned. Last night I gave him Friskies pate and he ate the whole can.

This morning he is in pain, in the bathtub struggling to pass bloody urine. I'll put a call in to the vet- of course they are closed for a 4 day holiday weekend....I was hoping to give the new antibiotic a chance but he is worse on it...he is passing small amounts of bloody urine so he isn't completely blocked-yet.

From personal experience...get him to the e-vet now. Straining to urinate can indicate a blockage, which is an emergency situation When Jesse James blocked, he went from acting normal (and he had just come off AB for a UTI) to in obvious distress within a couple hours. He was crying, straining to pass anything, vomiting. A couple hours earlier he had looked like his usual self. I rushed him to his regular vet, and they sent me to the e-vet a little while later as he deteriorated. He cried in pain the entire way. He was totally blocked and needed a catheter to clear it, and would likely not have survived the night without the procedure...all this within a span of a few hours from the onset of symptoms.

If you do take him in, make sure to have them send a culture as well, so you can get a handle on the infection, even if there is no blockage.

My husband is at the vets with him right now.I was very relieved to find out they are open till noon today!

Yes, Judah has gone that same route your Jesse did in the past.

The second visit we had him there(this UTI) the vet drew urine with a syringe from his bladder and put it under the microscope while we were there. even though it looked clear, it was full of infection, blood and he was spilling sugar also.

Since it is a holiday, and I just couldn't get away to go- 40 min 1 way drive-i hope to get through this weekend and if he is still having problems I will suggest the culture. something has got to give. And we are going out of town over New year's Weekend and I am so worried about leaving him. I think I will ask the vet to "hospitalize him" since they don't board, if he isn't 100% by then, heck, I am at the point of begging!

Aw, thanks JT- we sure need them! I have sure been sending them up!

They are back. DH said just as he went to get him out of his carrier at the vet he peed all over and it wasn't as bloody as earlier at home. he acts like he feels better. He got a shot, some RX too make his urine more acidic and some fiber pills. cause on top of everything else, poor guys is constipated going from dry to wet food. Right now he's on the bathroom counter watching the birds out the window.

He goes back for a check next thursday which will be good as we are planning to leave fri or Sat for our trip.
