Josie - AMPS - 380

OK, more time to type now!

For those who might be wondering what this is about, Josie went really low today - 91 at 3.5 hours. So I am trying to figure out what sort of dose to give her tonight. Some nice people (Sue and Oliver, primarily) offered to give me some advice about her dose for tonight!

Hi Holly,

She's back up in the same range as she was this am. 1.25 was too much since you got a really late nadir. What do you think about .8? Or if you want to be more conservative, .6?

Yeah, this morning she was at 320 and the 1.25 was too much. However, for some strange reason she seems to go MUCH lower during the daytime than overnight. I So I wonder if I should take that in to account? I use the U 40 syringes, so I can't give her .6 or .8 exactly, but I could give her a little over .5 or a little less than 1. Just not sure what to pick!

I forgot you didn't have U100s.. Think it is time to get some. Halfway between .5 and one would be .75. Think you could eyeball that? If not, try for a little more than .5?

Yeah, I probably should get some! Although I'm a little afraid I'll mess up the conversions. But yeah, I think I could eyeball .75.

Holly -

If you take a thin-lined Sharpie and mark your own 1/2 intervals on the U40s, it'll help with the eyeballing. Even w/ the larger doses I'm shooting now, I'm sticking with the U100s. It's much easier for me.

Good luck tonight. I'll be signing off shortly.

That's a good suggestion. You never know how accurate you are when you are eyeballing it, so I think that would help. I am considering switching to the U100's. But I am just so worried I'll confuse the conversion one time and then completely over or under dose her.

We gave Josie around .75 last night. I tested her at 3.5+ and she was at 296. Then tested her at 6.5+ and she was at 309. Weird that she'd go up between 3.5 and 6.5 hours, but maybe she hit her nadir early? I have a feeling her #'s will be high for the PMPS.

Not sure what we are going to give her this afternoon. I guess we will test her and decide based on the numbers. I really wish we could get on a set dose, (even if it's a set AM dose and set PM dose). But I don't think that's going to work for her.

Those are pretty nice numbers after the lows yesterday. They tend to be high and flat for a cycle after going low.

I'll study your ss today and we can go over a scale for her. What scale are you using now?

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. My husband wasn't happy that she was at 380 for the AMPS ("You fed her too much!"), but honestly, I thought it could have been worse. When she got really low two weeks ago I used a combo of high carb food and and Karo and she shot up to 580 later. So I thought the 380 was decent. Thank goodness for Donna's help and everyone's encouragment!

As far as the scale I'm using now... this sounds terrible but I'm not using a set one. I think that's the problem. My vet had given me one previously, but it doesn't apply at all now that she's eating more wet. She needs much less insulin now. I just kind of look at the previous numbers and try to figure it out. I almost always give between 1 and 1.5. I tend to give more after the AMPS (midnight) and less after the PMPS (noon), since she goes much lower during the day. But other than that I just look at the number, take into account if it's daytime or night and give something in that range. But I don't think that plan is working so well.

Thank you SO much for offering to look at her SS and give me advice. I could definitely use the help!

I took a quick look but I'm at work right now so will have to do it a little later today.

I just noticed this post! No rush... I appreciate whatever advice you can give me, whenever you have a chance! :-)
