Hello, my name is Breanna and our 5 year old kitty Jinx was diagnosed with diabetes today. He's been having some issues but it's been a crazy year with a lot of ups and downs and I thought it was due to so many changes constantly that he was just having a hard time dealing. He has had a lot of weight loss this year, starting out around 26 lbs and weighing in yesterday at 12lbs. Feeling quite overwhelmed with this diagnosis. It's hard to see a family member sick, and we know this will be hard financially as well. Going in Saturday to have the vet show me how to do the insulin injection. He just started antibiotics for a UTI as well. I've been doing as much reading as I could today since leaning of the diagnosis. Still pretty lost in all of this.
 
I was shown today how to give an insulin injection and given a prescription for novolin n u-100. My vet told me to keep it refrigerated. He said to give Jinx 3 units every 12 hours and to bring him in in one week to have his glucose checked again. He says I do not need to do home monitoring, but I'm working on getting a home meter anyway because I feel that giving insulin blindly is not a good idea. He is supposed to be eating the Purina DM wet food only now as well.
 
You can get cheaper low carb food vs. the prescription food. It is cheaper. Check out catinfo.org. Dr Lisa has a great spreadsheet for lots of commercial brands.

3 units seem high, I have not used novolin and am not an expert though!

Just watch as switching to a low carb food and lead to a pretty fast and dramatic drop in BG numbers.
