Just a quick update ... Today I saw Jim eat a piece of his cat grass and swallow it ...great , he can def swallow , but then I thought oh no here comes a vomit, but no...just wanted to chew. And I just arrived home to find that he had eaten a little bit of food off his plate!

So cautiously optimistic. He continues to improve - today came to greet me as I arrived home, and is making more attempts at grooming - doing paws, further up his legs, his nut sack and bum, and kind of spitting on his paw and wiping his face. He tries to groom his body but can't as his feeding tube neck bandage prevents him bending round. he ends up quite wet with cat spit as he has no tongue to wipe himself off.

The tube feeding is going well. I think we might have to 'run' him just a little hungry (carefully of course) to encourage the eating. Do have to also be mindful that he is a diabetic in remission . I have not tried putting pieces of food in his mouth as don't want to create an aversion - he has had so much trauma in his mouth.

He seems to have a stub of a tongue - you can sometimes just see it when he is grooming.

so, all fingers and claws crossed ...!

thanks!

I just actually saw him eat a little bit of meat... and it didn't seem too tricky for him. Feel very pleased as we didn't know if he would even be able to eat with such a disability. As for drinking, he will be on a wet diet were he will get nearly 90% of his fluid needs from food so I'm thinking I can just add that extra to his food. Also going to get a water fountain - maybe that might work for him. At the moment he has shown no interest in his water bowl as all fluid needs are being met via the feeding tube.

I have two who like a flowing water bowl and two who like just a regular bowl. I have the Drinkwell flowing fountain that has water falling like a faucet. Since it was plastic and I have one who has issues with feline acne, I bought a nice ceramic fountain from Drs. Foster and Smith for them last year either for their birthday or for Christmas. It did not flow like a faucet. It had water that was pumped up and flowed over the ceramic parts. It was only a sniff and go for the most part. I guess they like the water to flow down and not touch any part of the bowl. One of the others who had not used a flowing bowl did give it a try a couple of times but he didn't seem too thrilled. So I went back to the Drinkwell so that they would drink water.

I started adding water to their canned food a couple of months ago and have not seen anyone drink from any bowl. I have 3 large bowls but have seen no action at any of them. They get enough water from the canned food and my added water. I feed them two 5.5 oz. cans twice a day. I add about 1/4 cup - 1/3 cup water to two cans of food. I get my quota of peepees in the litter box so I hope that is enough.
