DEAR Lantus,

THis is tiggy and MICHYSWEETS i dont know how many remember us from the old board but we used to be regulars about a year ago.
Me and tiggy and spazz have been through alot together. Tiggy over the last 2 years though has continously been peeing everywhere. HE has been on lantus for 2.5 years and doing quite well. if many of you remember, I got pregnant and we now have a 6 month old baby girl. I love tiggy and we have been together for 10 years but his issue with peeing can not be stopped i have done everything i know and have asked any and all. I have even been locking him in the bathroom at night :roll:, to avoid him peeing on the carpet. I cant do it anymore, my baby is going to start crawling and i cant let my baby be in that. I dont want to take him to the shelter, afraid they will put him down. I know nobody who will take him and he has such high need. He cant be outside, he has been declawed. PLEASE IF WE COULD FIND HIM A GOOD HOME. I trust these people on this board with my baby.... please help me i dont want him to be put down.....To take care of him the way he needs to be taken care of......deserves he is a good cat loves people and has always been easy to shoot test and all that...

What have you tried so far so people don't start making the same suggestions that haven't worked? I'd also suggest posting on Health.
 
((((Tiff)))) Sienne asks a good question, if you can list what you've tried then maybe there is something you haven't thought of. Have you worked with your vet about this?
 
HE fixed we have tried seperating him from the other cat maybe its jelousy. Feliway. Calming collars. Tried spraying the house with vinegar, as they arent supposed to like the smell and wont return. tried miracle cat. He is very finicky and hates having a dirty litter box we clean it every day sometimes more. We put out extra litter boxes. we just dont have anything else to give..... HE gets pissed cause we dont have time for him like we used to gets jelous and pees on our daughters stuff. I have tried to give him extra special attention some one on one time, with an infant its been very hard as i also have a chronic condition that gives me no energy. He also takes his aggression out on spazz... im at my witts end and spending all this money on all this stuff is hard. i have a new child and not enough money....i dont know what my vet could do if you could point out some
 
please understand i dont want to get rid of him but i am just so clueless on how to fix this @-) @-) @-) @-) @-) @-)
 
I think the smart cat box is different from the one you are thinking of, there's no machine that scoops the litter away. Cat's pee on safflower seeds and the urine collects in a chamber below. here's the link if you want to check it out:

I'm so sorry for your frustration, I can't imagine having a baby and an ill kitty. I can totally understand your concern for your daughter. It does sound a bit behavioral though...Keep us posted
 
We used to have a cat that peed all over the house. After numerous vet visits, our vet put him on a small dose of Clomacalm. He stopped peeing outside the litter box. It did make him a little sedated and he gained wait, but he was a happy cat.
 
Is he peeing or spraying? I have the sweetest cat [everybody loves sammy] He backs up and sprays to get your attention, when he can't do something he wants, like go outside after I've got him in for the night.
 
I'd suggest picking up one of the books by Pam Johnson-Bennett (e.g., Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat). She's a feline animal behaviorist. It does sound like at least some of the problem is behavioral.

If your cat is jealous of the baby, you need to reward appropriate behavior. Can you bring Tiggy with you when you are with the baby. Call him into the baby's room and give him a treat. If you're sitting and feeding the baby, feed Tiggy at the same time. If the baby is in a swing or play pen, take a few minutes and pet Tiggy and give him a treat. Try to think about this as though you have a 3 yo and you then have a second child. The 3 yo may start doing things s/he outgrew -- wanting to be picked up all the time, wanting a bottle, forgetting about being potty trained, etc. Tiggy is doing the same thing -- it's just that he knows he gets attention, even if it's negative attention, by peeing where he's not supposed to.
 
Just as a short term fix ... there was a post about older cats, and one poster (Martica and Fred) mentioned using diapers on her elderly cat. I know it's not a long term fix for you, and you don't want TWO babies in diapers, but it might give you a bit of breathing space:

If anyone needs diaper info I can help. I was going to do a post about it because I think a lot of people put their cats to sleep when they start getting problems here, thinking their quality of life is affected. It's not at all. Fred doesn't really get what the diaper is for, I don't think (since he sometimes still goes to the litter box--and I keep it there as a token for him). And the diaper keeps them clean. If he's NOT wearing it and pees it ends up getting on him and he's dirty. The diaper just soaks it all up. The overnight diapers (for babies) are better since they are more absorbent)

 
First I'd have him checked by the vet. Make sure nothing is physically wrong.

Second, you need to get rid of the urine odors. My foster manager directed me to this product: http://www.thornell.com/products/Cat_Odor_Off-6-2.html . I used it on the mattress Atlas soaked through his first two days here back in March. I can safely say now...it works. I had no residual odors during the heat of summer and my other felines totally ignore the mattress. So no compounded peeing on top for territory sake.

Third, if he is jealous of the baby...as someone else pointed out....treat him like a toddler.
 
First of all I apologize but i have tried similar things to the smart box.... it was horrible the odor was horrible. I am trying but it is extremely hard to just pull 50 or 60 bucks on something that might or not work. I understand we are trying to be constructive. As for diapers, not something i want to have to give in to but will do. Im going to have to take him in. It has been a long time but i dont believe he has an infection..... I will have to make an appt for him next week and see about prozac...
 
The first paragraph talks about the possible physical reasons for this inappropriate behavior. Before you think of it as being totally behavioral, a trip to the vet is in order. Once they rule out any physical problems, then the behavior modifications will be of interest. If it is physical, it could be signaling something serious....

i was just thinking about you the other day. knew you had to have had the baby by now... and she's now 6 months old! congratulations!!!
like the others have said, a vet visit is a must. have tiggy checked out. it *sounds* like a behavioral problem, but there could be some health issue behind it with an easy fix. if it's not a medical problem, others have used kitty prozac with great success. i know how much you love tiggy and know it would tear you apart to have to rehome him.

you asked about pet diapers. google "pet diapers for cats". you'll get lots of hits... including instructions on how to convert a baby diaper into a pet diaper.
