Hi Everyone,

My cat, Jibber, has had chronic constipation for several years now. He is 11 years old next month, according to his original vet's estimation when he first came here as a stray.

I have had him on Lactulose, which never helped. I have him now on Miralax, twice a day, in his wet food, with water added. Plus I am giving him, the last few days, Laxatone from a tube, directly on my finger into his mouth. Also, squirted some water into the side of his mouth a little bit at a time. He is NOT a water drinker.

Pulled up all dry food (I was barely feeding any) and am now trying to strictly keep him and my other three cats on wet food with water added, only.

He became very constipated two days ago, and I thought I would have to take him to the vet's. But, due to the cost, and the fact that Jibber is a biter, I did not feel I could deal with taking him.

I knew though, that he should not suffer this way. He seemed so swollen up. I listened to his lungs and heart (I have a stethoscope), and he does have some allergies and a slight bit of wheezing.

So, I finally was able to see him have a large bowel movement yesterday morning.

My point is, there is a company (here is the link): http://www.allergicpet.com that sells a product that is homeopathic. Here is the link to that product:

http://www.allergicpet.com/products/lax_eze.html

Has anyone here had any success with this product? If I took him to the vet's, he is hard to deal with, plus they want an arm and a leg in costs for a complete checkup. The girl was ringing up the 'estimate' and she was up to about 700 dollars!!!

I wondered if anyone here knew anything about this stuff (the Lax-eze). Sounds great according to the testimonials from a lot of people.

Thanks for any suggestions. He won't eat pumpkin, and he does not drink water. So, I have to get it into him somehow each day, especially with giving him the Miralax. I had to buy the generic last time. Do you think that does not work as well as the brand? I had always used the brand before.

Here is Jibber's picture yesterday:

Have you tried probiotics?

My cat also has chronic kidney disease, so I have her on Azodyl. I took her off Azodyl to try a different product, and she became very constipated. I added Azodyl back to her diet, and within 24 hours, she was regular again (and has stayed that way).

Maybe you can ask your vet to recommend a good probiotic for kitty. Plus, have you tried adding a couple of dropper-fuls of water to the wet food? Is Jibber dehydrated at all? If so, has your vet recommended home-administered subcutaneous fluids?

Hi DZ and Sarah,

No, never tried probiotics. I do add water to Jibber's food every day several times. I do not see Jibber being dehydrated, and I know he would not tolerate fluids done here at home, or anywhere.

Before giving fluids, he would have to have a thorough heart work up. I would not want to push him into congestive heart failure.

Thanks for the info!

Hi Jean
I haven't used this product but I'm fairly new to feline constipation. I joined the yahoo feline megacolon constipation group. You should join and post there. They seem like a pretty good group. It seems like they tend to believe in low residue and low fiber. Brie had a few enemas recently. I'm giving him 1/4 tsp miralax twice a day mixed in his wet food with extra water. After his 2nd enema he was on cisapride for 4 days. Right now he seems much better. The miralax works on newer stool.

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for that information. I may join that group. Jibber has gone well today. I do give him a quarter teaspoon of Miralax twice a day in his wet food, and I am not letting him eat any dry food. What are you feeding your Brie? I have three of my four cats on Friskies, like Mixed Grill, or some of the fish flavors. Plus I give Jibber a little bit of A/D wet food with the Miralax and add a good amount of water too.

Are you using the generic Miralax? Or the brand name? I would rather use the brand, but maybe the generic is okay too, I hope.

Is Cisapride a drug that needs to be prescribed by the vet? I have never used that before.

Thanks again!

Re: Jibber, Constipation, Use of Lax-Eze, Anyone know of thi

Hi Jean, just an idea to get him to drink more liquids. We often roast a chicken so I put the giblets in a pan of water and cook for about 10 minutes until completely cooked. When it cools, I pop in the frig and when cold, skim off the solid fat that's on top leaving only juice. Put some in a small bowl, add a bit of water (not too much so it still has a nice chicken flavor) and slightly warm if needed. I also add this to Niko's food in place of water when it's available. You can freeze it in small containers and pop in the freezer for later use. And of course he gets chopped up bits of gibblets as a topper.

For a cheaper source of Miralax, try a big box store like Costco. You can get 3 17.9 oz bottles for $22 called LaxaClear and it's the same exact ingredients as Miralax. If you were closer I'd give you a bottle.

Re: Jibber, Constipation, Use of Lax-Eze, Anyone know of thi

Hi Jean
Brie eats fancy feast classics usually salmon, turkey or chicken. He is diabetic and has been eating all wet food since his diagnosis over 4 years ago. I have 4 cats and have always fed mostly wet. On occasion I used to feed some dry but not often. I think Brie's CKD has something to do with his constipation. I use the brand name Miralax. The cisapride is a prescription medication so you would have to get it at the vet or a pharmacy. I only got 10 capsules from my vet and I don't know what I got charged for them. The capsules I got were 10 mg. I'm not sure if this is a compounded medication or not. I think I remember reading on the megacolon group that it is a little pricey. I've gotten compounded meds from Roadrunner and I've also gotten things from Thriving Pets. Most of the meds for my cats I get at the hospital pharmacy where I work and I get them close to cost. The cisapride helps with motility. How long has Jibber been getting the Miralax? I think when Brie had his first enema he didn't get cleaned out all the way. When I went back to the vet I was still concerned that he wasn't going. I had her do an xray and he still had a large amount of impacted stool in the distal portion of his colon. You could see that the proximal part of his colon had less dense stool and that was where the miralax had started working. She did another enema and he had good results. He even had results on the way home in the carrier. What a mess. I gave him the cisapride for 4 days after his second enema. With 4 cats it's can be hard to monitor Brie's bowel movements. My cats hate to be isolated. Luckily Brie doesn't bury. I know he had a good BM today. Definately join the megacolon group. My vet even asked me how I felt about giving Brie a glycerin suppos. If he needs it I would definately do it. I had a question about giving the suppos and posted it to the megacolon group and got a response. Hopefully I won't have to do it. Is Jibber diabetic or does he have kidney disease? I think you wrote that you add extra water to his food. I was told to do this and Brie eats his wet food mushy now.

Re: Jibber, Constipation, Use of Lax-Eze, Anyone know of thi

Hi Carol and Sandy,

Just a quick note right now. It is late, and my other cat I have been having so much trouble with, Ketchie, is not doing well today. This is like a three ring circus around here. I once had more cats than what I do now, and it seemed easier, but I think that was because they were all young. Now three old cats, and it is terrible dealing with their chronic problems. Plus I am getting older and have gone through breast cancer, and just have to take one day at a time.

Jibber is not diabetic. Kidney disease? I have not had bloodwork done on him in a long time, probably since his major surgery in 2007. He is so hard to handle, that I am almost afraid to even try to take him to the vet's. :(

I must go now. Thanks for all the good information! I will look into joining that "poop group". I know this is not funny, but I thought that sounded cute. I had a throat swelling last night, and took 7 Benadryl in a matter of a few hours, and I still feel tired from taking so much Benadryl.

Thanks again!

Re: Jibber, Constipation, Use of Lax-Eze, Anyone know of thi

Hi Jean
It sure is hard when you are dealing with chronic issues. I lost one of my seniors this past summer. I have 2 seniors with chronic issues. There have been many days where I have felt overwhelmed. I'm sorry Ketchie was having a bad day. My Vandow has so many lives I have lost count. I've always been lucky that my cats have allowed me to take them to the vet without to much trouble. I've also been lucky that they allow me to do things like fluids, pilling, ear sticks. It sounds like Jibber doesn't like to have this kind of handling. He looks good in his picture. We do what we can for our fur babies but we also have to try to listen to them too. I hope the miralax helps him.

Laxeze absolutely works. It has saved my cat Pedro from constipation due to an injury prior to being rescued. 1/4 teas twice a day in his food has been a life saver.
This may be a late post but I just now saw the question.

I need to clarify my response a spray of laxeze will certainly help constipation. I use it on my Pedro. I also use miralax 1/4 teas twice a day in food. Hope that clear up my previous post. I was so anxious to reply to help with your question I didnt slow down and proofread

I use 1/4 of acidophilus 1 billion cfu tablet (human kind from Walmart) for my 18 pound civvie. It has helped his constipation. Goes at least once a day now. Not too soft which I'm happy about. Generic miralax made him have dark runny poop. It got the job done but maybe worked a bit too much for him. He use to get the "green poop goop" :joyful: I think it's lactulose and it didn't really get him moving regularly.

Pet alive makes natural moves which is all natural and works well ---as well as only natural pets gi support which is for a healthy gut.

Totally agree with Jayla !!! Elmo had problems with constipation and since using Natural Moves by Pets Alive he has a BM easily every day. I use only 1/8 capsule twice daily tho recommended start dose is 1/4 twice daily. It has worked wonders...I administer by diluting in 2 t water and slowly syringing ( he won't eat it in his food). . This product is well worth a try

How much Lactulose are you dosing? My vet increased from 2ml 2x/day to 3ml 2x/day and that has seemed to help. I also use RenewLife probiotics, PetAive Natural Moves, PetWellbeing BM smooth, Slippery Elm, Miralax, pumpkin and a little ground flax all scattered throughout his meals. I try everything to keep him regular because he is showing signs of Megacolon due to his Acromegaly.
