Jett has been on Levemir for 20 days now. He responded at first, but now all high BG#s. The vet started him on Epakitin on the 7th. Has anyone had any issues with Epakitin impacting BG? About an hour before his AM and PM shots, he starts howling a lot and very loud. It's really distressing!

Thanks for your help and SS observations. I added a Medication tab in the SS file, so you can see what he gets each day.

Hugs to you and your furbaby.
Patti + Jett

you are my first encounter of Epakitin .... but looking up it's ingredients.... lactose is a type of sugar....

you could remove it and see if you see a change....

my bigger observation on your ss is how fast he is able to travel down , pink, yellow, green... and then that green causes the huge spike back up.....
i am suspicious that when you see blacks... that there might have been a green pretty close to it....
imho, you are probably on the right path with the lower dose... but unfortunately more data is the real clue needed.....

I will go back thru your history and read up....
i'm curious as to why the kitty prozac....

if there are behaviour issues, they might have been instigated by all the changes ... in the home last year....
some cats are very sensitive .... I tho't bombays were known for that ( haven't had one tho')

So sorry for your loss....:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
I'll be back....

Can you get a curve sometime soon Patti? It's good to reevaluation the dose every 7 days, and I think he may need to go back up to 1.0 units.

Why is Jett getting Epakitin? I see it referred to as a phosphorus binder, but Jett's phosphorus is fine on his current labs. Did you start it the same day as starting Levemir? It's helpful to us if you put any medications started in the Remarks column.

I too am questioning the need for a phosphorus binder. If one were needed I think aluminum hydroxide would be a better choice but I don't see the need.

Thank you, Rhiannon. The kitty prozac is for over-grooming. He's been on it for several years. I tried to wean him off of it last year right before he was diagnosed with FD. I still question if the wean made his BG spike. When I couldn't get him regulated without the fluoxetine, I put him back on it, since he was over-grooming his belly and arm. He is a sensitive kitty and had a very difficult time seeing my husband sick and still looks for him to come home.

Thanks, Wendy. The vet put Rhett (high phos in his bloodwork) and Jett on the Epakitin, since the food for diabetics is high protein and Jett's kidney values were very high. I stopped the Epakitin this morning and can do a curve this weekend. I was wondering if I needed to go back up to 1.0 units. I guess the curve will tell us that? Thanks! Patti + Jett

By the way, it's OK to feed higher protein food for earlier stage CKD cats, just not higher phosphorus. What you want is good quality protein and low phosphorus.

Good luck with the curve when you get to it.

Patti, I put together a list of low carb/low phosphorus foods from Tanya's site. I used the pricing from the links to come up with the cost/oz. It may help give you some ideas for food.

Let me know if you have any issues with it or questions.
Thank you so much for the food list! I was feeding Weruva canned Fowl Ball and Chicken Frick A'Zee, but both Rhett and Jett stopped eating it a few weeks ago. I wish I could get them to eat it. The ingredients are so much better than the Royal Canin food.

Maybe try a topper? Freeze dry, purebites or maybe Bonita Flakes? Just a suggestion.

This is what I do.

This is for two days (4 cycles). He gets PS, +2.5, +4.5 and +6.5 every cycle.
2-6oz Fowl Ball AND 1-5.5oz of Instinct or Wellness Core.
Mix together well. Divide equally by 4 (I put in individual plastic containers and use a scale)

When I was trying to get him off FF (high phos) I mixed 1-6oz Fowl Ball and 1-3oz FF (he had been on FF alone when I found out he had high phos). I did that for about a week and then I introduced the FB & Wellness Core for two days and then a day of FB & FF. Just played that game until he was transitioned over. I just started the Instinct this week and he is eating that mixture well also.

I stay away from all fish/seafood. I save that treat for when he has issues (panc flare) to entice him to eat.
