Went today for Jester's third vet visit. His blood glucose count is down to 317 from about 480 last week and his weight has come back up from 10 lbs 14 oz to 11 lbs 1 oz (last summer he was about 12 lbs 8 oz).

The vet said this is encouraging and had me increase his insulin to 2 units 2x a day from 1.5 units.

Although the vet just wants Jester to keep eating as long as it's canned, I wouldn't mind moving him to a lower carb food. He'll only eat pate occasionally, which leaves out a lot of obvious choices. His favorite is Friskies indoor chunky chicken with gravy (it also has rice).

I tried slowly over a week mixing more and more low carb Sheba with his Friskies in hopes that might wean him off. But little by little I was having to go through so many hoops just to get him to finish a bowl, I finally gave in and served up the stuff unadorned and he ate like he hadn't had a meal in a week.

My next try I'm going to look into ProPlan - they have a chunky low-carb food that I want to try mixing in with his favorite a bit at a time to see if I can con him into liking it.

But I'm also considering coming up with a kitty-palatable carb free gravy - or something like a gravy.

Have any of you attempted such a recipe successfully already?

I'm thinking of either using pureed baby food meats which are already low in carbs and thinning it out, or thinly pureeing low to no carb cat foods.

Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Thanks!

Have you tried Forti Flora? It's a powder that comes in little packets that contains the same stuff they spray on the outside of kibble to make it so cats will eat it.

I think China would eat sawdust with some Forti Flora on it!!....LOL

You can get it on Amazon, Chewy.com and lots of other online places or some vets offices carry it (but it costs more)

I've never heard of it.
If I can find the manufacturer, I'll see if they can give me a sample. I'm low income and extra purchases can be difficult.

Hi!
Max cat makes a few flavors under 10% and they have some gravy.
the food chart will tell you which ones -I know the duck and venison are.

My cats love the Fancy Feast Chunky Chicken and Chunky Turkey which are low carb.
I would think using some all meat and broth (no onions or garlic) baby food as gravy would work.

someone in the supply closet has some they are giving away (unless they are all gone)

I told Jennifer to leave the post for a day or two to see if anybody else wanted to try at the time, to not be greedy, and send me the rest. I would gladly send one to Shelaghc though :). So, Shelaghc let me know if you want a packet and I'll send you a PM (Private message). Don't post your addy here ;).

Additionally, my boy is not a pate fan either so here are some foods I've found for my boy:
Fancy Feast:
  • Roasted Chicken Feast
  • Roasted Turkey Feast
  • Chunky Chicken
  • Chunky Turkey
  • Flaked Chicken and Tuna Feast
  • Purely Naturals in broth
Friskies:
  • Flaked Tuna
  • Flaked Tuna w/Egg
Nature's Recipe:
  • Grain free Chicken in broth
  • Grain free Chicken and Turkey in broth
  • Grain free Indoor
ProPlan:
  • True Nature Beef & Liver in gravy
  • True Nature Chicken & Turkey in gravy
There are a few more but these are all the <10% carb ones. Sometimes I have to go a little into MC (medium carb)
