Went today for Jester's third vet visit. His blood glucose count is down to 317 from about 480 last week and his weight has come back up from 10 lbs 14 oz to 11 lbs 1 oz (last summer he was about 12 lbs 8 oz).
The vet said this is encouraging and had me increase his insulin to 2 units 2x a day from 1.5 units.
Although the vet just wants Jester to keep eating as long as it's canned, I wouldn't mind moving him to a lower carb food. He'll only eat pate occasionally, which leaves out a lot of obvious choices. His favorite is Friskies indoor chunky chicken with gravy (it also has rice).
I tried slowly over a week mixing more and more low carb Sheba with his Friskies in hopes that might wean him off. But little by little I was having to go through so many hoops just to get him to finish a bowl, I finally gave in and served up the stuff unadorned and he ate like he hadn't had a meal in a week.
My next try I'm going to look into ProPlan - they have a chunky low-carb food that I want to try mixing in with his favorite a bit at a time to see if I can con him into liking it.
But I'm also considering coming up with a kitty-palatable carb free gravy - or something like a gravy.
Have any of you attempted such a recipe successfully already?
I'm thinking of either using pureed baby food meats which are already low in carbs and thinning it out, or thinly pureeing low to no carb cat foods.
Any thoughts or other suggestions?
Thanks!
