We just don't know what to do! He's always had what we thought were allergies. Mostly because that was what we were told they were.
We took him to the vet several years ago, and they gave him some pills along with a shot and some eye grease. It seemed to work out fine then. This even was before he had diabetes. He's had this for several years now. He has only had diabetes for 2 1/2 years. He will be 15 years old this year.
This fall he came down with the same old allergies, runny eyes with a reddish brown discharge and swollen face. He just looked miserable. It didn't clear up in a week so we took him to the vet again in August of last year, pill, eye grease and shot. It sorta cleared up. His face is still swollen and continues to have runny eyes. Now they say he has bronchitis. They've given pills (the pills now cause him to vomit and have diarrhea and when we told a second dr from the same clinic this, they told us "Well I don't know why he prescribed that, those pills are poisonous to cats!" WHAT?!)
Soooo... it's been over 6 months and STILL this thing hasn't cleared up. We took him again to the vet (we live in Pasquotank County and went to see Dr. Cooper) and he is now referring us to a specialist in VA to look at his eyes because the dr. has "exhausted all of his knowledge" of how to deal with it.
What are we doing wrong? Should we have taken him somewhere else?
He is otherwise pretty health considering his diabetes, however his weight fluctuates so much and the dr. tells us every thing is fine. I mean 2 pounds change up or down each month kind of fluctuation.
Long story short, symptoms include: runny eyes (clear discharge, some time some green discharge), swollen face, lethargy, large pupils, sensitivity to light. He often walks around our home with his eyes closed. He would rather pretend he's blind then open his eyes.

Bless your heart. I feel so sorry for him!! I dont have any experience with this however maybe you can do some research on the internet about eye problems with cats and find something?
I've had some issues with the eyes before however not to the degree that you are having. I hope that some one else on the board can help you! :YMHUG:

Have his teeth been checked recently? I do know that dental issues can cause similar symptoms with runny eyes and facial swelling. (It can also cause a spike in BGs, so if he does have a dental infection that gets treated, he might even require a lower dose of insulin).

What are the medications you are giving him?

Honestly, given how long this is going on and that there is no answers or resolution to this, I would take the cat to a specialist. When you do, be sure to bring a copy of his medical records, including tests and names of all medications, eye grease, etc that he has been given.

The vets thought Spitzer had feline herpes for years. It wasn't. MedVet did a "respiratory" blood panel through IDEXX lab and he was diagnosed with a form of bartonella.

Your vet may be able to do similar blood testing at an IDEXX lab near, you, by shipping, or using a different speciality lab provider.

You said you're in Pasquatank County - in NC???

I"ve had 4 of my cats and a foster treated at Animal Eye Care in Cary, NC, just outside Raleigh. They are amazing! Technologically it's like you going to an eye dr - not the old equipment to manually check eye pressure, etc. I would get him there ASAP - needs referral, but your vet should do that. If you're close and I can be of help, send a PM.

Are they recommending Southpaws in Virginia? They have a very good feline eye specialist there.

Any chance you can go back to your first post and take the 911 icon down?

I think the emergency situation has been resolved.

Update:
Jericho started throwing up and not eating and going hypo on Sunday. So Monday we stopped the insulin and started our watch. We ended up taking him to a different Vet in our area on Tuesday when it didn't get better and he refused to eat. Jericho is no longer diabetic (for now) he's completely off insulin for at least 7 to 10 days. Then we check to see how he's holding up.
Our vet looked into his eyes, and yes it's Herpes. He has a small lesion which is causing his eyes to water and the virus is a bit stronger than usually because it was not dealt with properly.
He's home now and resting. He still hates the vet, but we are hoping this will be the start of recovery for him! 7 months of sick cat is no fun!
Thank you everyone for all of your support.

Did your vet prescribe l-lysine, an amino acid (protein building block) to help support recovery?

If not, ask the vet.

It is available over the counter in a variety of forms - powdered, food gel, and treats. My cats loved the Vetri-lysine.
