Jenks might be shunning wet food again

He got sick early Sunday morning (3/23) and threw up all over the place. This was followed by a bout of diarrhea that has yet to resolve itself. The meal that preceded this incident was Friskies salmon pate.

Ever since he has shown little to no appetite for wet food. When presented with it, he'll eat a couple small bites before pushing it away. Neither FortiFloria nor parmesan cheese seem to entice him to eat more.

I can't afford for him to lose weight. Nor can I afford additional muscle wasting. So in order to get calories and protein into him, I gave him Temptation treats and a palm-full of Purina Naturals kibble, which is the only dry food I have lying around. He gobbled them up like it was the last food on earth.

So he appears to still have an appetite, but presently not for Friskies. I ran out late to buy a couple different brands of wet food to see if anything appealed to him without much success. He sampled some Whiskas before pushing it away. I'll try some additional ones later today.

I'm worried that the Friskies was bad and gave him some sort of food poisoning that has left his GI unsettled. Is he possibly associating wet food with being sick and therefore avoiding it? He clearly has an appetite. Unfortunately, it's for something that's not good for him. But I have to give him some sort of food in the meantime so that he'll eat.

Ideas on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Mel (Momma of Muse in Relaxed Lantus) recently had ALL of her cats get ill on Friskies. The local vet had seen others, so there was a bad batch out in the Nebraska area. Mine seem OK so far.

Yes, food aversions can be learned - if it makes me sick, don't eat it. For the moment, consider 1/4 tablet of Pepcid 20-30 minutes before meals, and switch to a different product. Also, check if your vet is seeing more cases.

Maybe call the Friskies manufacturer and let them know the code numbers of the products you bought. That will help them track down if there is a problem with a specific plant. I did this with Wellness when I was feeding it and one batch would make them sick but another wouldn't. It was 2 different plants. They sent me a certificate for an entire case ... which I couldn't redeem until I could find one from the good plant.

My cat developed a definate adversion/allergy to fish cat food. She pukes it up everytime, so no more fishies for her.

*knock on wood* Thankfully, it appears that Jenks' appetite has returned!

That can of Friskies salmon pate really knocked him for a loop. But after one more round of loose stools (which must've finally eliminated whatever was causing him GI distress), he was out in the kitchen looking for food. I gave him a can of Turkey & Gibs (purchased from a store other than Petsmart), and he ate with enthusiasm. I was so relieved!

I'm going to keep him on Turkey & Gibs for his next few feedings, hoping that the consistency will be easy on what I'm sure is a sensitive recovering stomach and intestines.
