Hey everyone! I had a question regarding my cats bathroom habits and not sure if any of you have experienced with your cats and maybe get some advice.

How we found out Jelly was diabetic is because I took her to the vet because she kept using the restroom outside the litter. At first the vet thought it was a behavior thing because after some test came out she was diabetic. My thing is she is refusing to use the litter box still, we have changed cat litter brands, even added extra cat litters around the house. She tends go to the front door and do her business, and it got to the point every day she was doing this, so we started to put training pads at the front door, and that is where she is going. Not sure if any of you had this problem, did it subside? Also there are times her bowel movements are really runny, can this be due to her insulin, she is on ProZinc. I am hoping and praying it does, because its not a good thing to wake up to in the morning :arghh: Any advice is truly appreciated!

Fortunately I didn't have litter box issues with Squeaker. So I can't offer advice there other than to say maybe it's just due to the big changes she is experiencing.

As for the loose stools. Squeaker experience that when he was first diagnosed. There was another user earlier today with the same problem only she was using Lantus (as we did). Again, it could be the stress of all the changes in her life, higher water consumption, change in food, pancreatitis, any or all of these or a combination of them. You can add pure pumpkin to Jelly's food and that will help to stop the loose stools. Make sure to use the pure pumpkin and not the pie mix. The only ingredient should be pumpkin. Try 1/2 teaspoon in her food and increase it after 24 hours if it doesn't work.

Oh yes I know that issue all to well, Magellan had, has it too. I have not found runny poo is not due to insulin use it is I found due to a too rapid change in his food. Or getting food that has a higher fat content that he is used to. As for getting them to quit peeing in front of the door heck if I know but if you learn please share. My carpet there is ruined and I can kiss off my move in deposit.

Hi there,

I've been a member here for just over a year and I've seen threads for several diabetic kitties who developed elimination issues. They have tended to get better as they become better regulated.

Things to check with your vet include testing for UTIs and also for B12 and potassium levels (both of the latter may cause weakness if they're out of whack).

Re the runny bowel movements, are you transitioning Jelly's diet at the moment?

I definitely have changed Jelly's diet from solely dry food to nothing but wet food, but I noticed she had the runny poo before even being on insulin. I am hoping it will subside in time. Only good thing is the other cats haven't followed in her steps..I would be in big trouble if they all did. If I find out anything to solve this I will definitely pass it on. I get so frustrated at times, but I keep telling myself I know she isn't doing it on purpose. I am just glad she is using training pads.

I am hoping that will be the same thing with Jelly as she gets better regulated with her BG her bowel movements will go back to normal. She recently got checked for a UTI and she was given antibiotics, I am not sure with the B12 or Potassium but I will definitely mention that she has a visit coming up soon. Her using the restroom outside the litter has been going on for several months, as well as her runny poo but its not all the time, like there are days she will have runny poo once and the rest of the days its normal.

As a matter of fact since Jelly has been diagnosed with diabetes I have changed her diet. Which I am glad to say she has taken on well too.

Is Jelly having any mobility problems at all? (Just asking because I was wondering if she has trouble stepping up & over the edge of the litterbox ...)

As far as I can tell I don't think so, I mean she is still jumping on my recliner and the couches and such. But I have several cat litters I could bring out the lower one and see if that might help. Never thought about mobility issues.

I had a question regarding treats. I didn't know if you guys knew of a good low carb treats to get Jelly I love giving her treats after her letting check her BG. However I want to start giving her low carb treats, whether they are online or found in stores, thanks!

One more thought: You mentioned that Jelly has recently been treated with an antibiotic for UTI. Did the vet re-check to make certain the UTI is really gone? Several years back when Bat-Bat had a UTI, it took 3 rounds (3 different antibiotics) until the UTI was resolved.

Re diabetic-friendly treats, any freeze-dried protein snack is good. I think Pure Bites may be a brand available in the US (but don't quote me! ;) ). Anyone else got recommendations, please?

Little bits of home-cooked chicken are OK as treats, too. We have to do something to let our darlings know what great patients they are! :)

I found an amazing low carb treat for my cat that he simply loves. It's called Wildside Salmon. It is little pieces of freeze dried salmon. That's it. There are no other ingredients. I found it in a little specialty pet food store but you may also be able to get it online. I have to hide it in a sealed jar in a drawer because Radar tried to scale the refrigerator in order to get it one day. :)

I know the antibiotic he injected Jelly with was suppose to last for 3 weeks, however when I take her back I can ask for him to check again just in case. I know sometimes those UTI can be stubborn.

I have heard someone else mention freeze-dried protein snacks will look into that. I will search for Pure Bites and see if they are in the states. You are right, Jelly has been amazing for me that I have to reward her to let her know she is doing great!

Antibiotics can cause runny poo, however what you're describing sounds suspiciously like inflammatory bowel disease with the erratic episodes.

Yeah it hits every so often, like she will go days without having runny really smelly poo then she will have one or two episodes. I am going to start keeping track and see if i can find if there is something causing it, and bring it up to the vet and see what he thinks. If I can find what is causing that I would feel better. I can manage the pee but the poo is starting to be a problem and I know she isn't doing it on purpose.

Oh wow! I will look it up, if I have a variety of low carb treats for Jelly I think she would love that. Plus with Jelly on a special diet i am starting to change all my cats too, so they will all benefit from low carb! Thanks for the info!

Aww, I am the lucky one to have her. She is actually my brothers cat, but ever since she was diagnosed with diabetes I have kind of taken over in caring for her, since my brother works alot of hours and can't give 100%

Jelly has a very interesting story. Her mother (Toni) was a wild cat that my mom caught in a box, she was also a beautiful calico. Jelly looks like her mom so much. This was before we neutered/spayed our cats well as you can imagine Toni had several litters and when she had kittens my family would find homes for but there were several cats we kept from Toni's litter from Toni's second litter we kept Merlin (who recently passed away at the age of 14) Lucy (which was my baby and she passed in 2012 due to kidney failure) Jelly and Cuddles (which were from Toni's 3rd litter) Cuddles sadly passed away one day we have no idea why, she didn't show symptoms of being ill. It hit Jelly very hard.

Most of Toni's babies went to friends and some are still alive others have passed. My cat Lucy had one litter and I kept Gwen who I still have. But Jelly and Gwen are the last of Toni's offspring because we started spaying/neutering out animals, so Jelly holds a special place in my heart she is also our first and hopefully only sugar baby so all this is an experience for me..lol

A precious girl, indeed. :)

I've just had a gander at Jelly's spreadsheet. I see she's responding well (sometimes too well!) to her insulin. Keeping fingers and paws crossed that she'll continue to make great progress. :)

Aww, thank you! I am hoping she continues to make good progress that way when she goes to her vet appointment next week I can give the vet some good news, and hopefully decrease her insulin dosage.
