Jeddie's swatch for "Bittersweet" shawl project

There isn't much I can post these days about FD as it relates to my crew (sigh), but my memory project for Jeddie, the lace shawl with his colors, is about to cast on. Prep work involves knitting a swatch to check the gauge. I did the one for the project and then did another that I am calling "Jeddie's Swatch". It includes the two beads and I worked it so there are 12 finished leaves (or petals) and one unfinished one (top, center) to symbolize his unfinished 13th year. I went back and forth on that: finish it because he was not able to, leave it unfinished because that was where he left this world? I REALLY wanted him to have that whole year (and many more)! In the end, though, I have to honor what his life was, not what it should have been (in my mind). (there are what look like three half leaves on each side that are just part of the border/edge area).

So, here is the swatch................................and here is a close up of the beads:

The center bead is reflecting light, but in "real life" it is very close to his eye color - pale, celery green.

The yarn colors are not exact to his fur colors, but there is nothing closer that I could find (yes, I started looking after I realized I was "matching" him). Here is a close up of his side fur. It's more orangy and less pink than the yarn:

I think it will be just perfect and I hope making it gives you some peace in remembering his precious life while he was with you.

What a special project, all of the thought and love you put into even the planning. You're amazing (((Sheila))) in so many ways.

I can't wait to see the finished project! What a wonderful tribute to a very very special boy! (mine would be honored if I'd get around to printing their pics to put in the collage - nearly empty - hanging in the hallway). There's a knitting and crocheting group at my church and every few weeks they dedicate prayer shawls that are given away. And from the other side.... when my BIL was going through his chemo for colon cancer, the local girl scout troop brought tied blankets for each patient. I know how special it was to him as a recipient - and still is! So, not to be outdone by a bunch of girls, the boy scouts that BIL has volunteered with for 20 years, did more blankets. Maybe after you complete Jeddie's shawl, if you have extra time, perhaps you might like to do some for a local group or even DCIN or folks here.

I know it must seem strange to not be reporting every few hours. It's sad when our paths change. But we all look forward to seeing your project progress (I can't believe you have so much done already!) and hearing more about future endeavors.

The colors may not be exact, but the love for him shows up in every thread - and bead!

I have been thinking about donating items to be auctioned off for DCIN. I simply HAVE to knit (or crochet) [yes, I am addicted to it  ] and there is only so many shawls or other items I can use or even give as gifts.

My sister knits on the way to work  (when BIL is driving!) She says she traded in a 50 gallon drum of antacid for a pair of knitting needles. This week they will be riding the Habitat 500 bike race - and yes, she's got her needles packed! She was looking for a particular sock pattern this afternoon! :-D The angel trees at Christmas are always a good option for her (mittens, hats and scarves in Minnesota winters are a no-brainer!). I'm sure you'll find plenty of willing recipients! Especially if they're as pretty as the design your working on now! "Bittersweet" will become "Priceless" instead!!! ;-)

Just beautiful, I love the beads.

I like the idea of making things to be auctioned off for DCIN. I may have to pick up my needles again. I ran out of people to give my stuff to.

Very beautiful Sheila! A wonderful Jeddie tribute! I often think of my beading as a meditation or sorts, and I am sure your knitting and crocheting are the same.

Sheila that is so beautiful. What a lovely way to honor Jeddie. Your comments about his unfinished year had me crying.

((((Sheila)))))
