JayJay's Recent Stay at the Vet - sick, sick boy.

Hi there!

I joined this board just two days ago and the day after writing out an introduction of JayJay and I the poor guy had to be rushed to the vet and ended up having to stay over night so being a brand new mom of a diabetic, I wanted to get a couple of opinions if you guys wouldn't mind?

JayJay is brand newly diagnosed. We just started him on his insulin on Tuesday. He was acting a bit loopy during the day and we called the vet to come over and check him out. Nothing too much just not *right*. The vet took his bs reading and it was at 273. She decided that his 1unit of Lantis was too much and took him down to .5 until just onece a day. She gave him some meds for nausea and we were on our way!

Wednesday he did okay, seemed a bit better (Perhaps his body was starting to adjust) didn't need any anti-nausea pills, everything seemed to be alright.

Thursday morning he met me at the bedroom door purring and generally happy and very hungry for his food. The routine he and I set up was that I would get up and immediately feed him while I'm showering for work and that way once I was dressed, he would have a full tummy and I could give him his medicine.

Well by the time I got out of the shower he'd thrown up EVERYWHERE. He kept going back to his water dish and drinking more but then just throwing it up. By the end of an hour he looked like a shadow of his former self and I couldn't get a hold of my vet so I rushed him to an emergency animal hospital.

Thankfully, we were able to pick JayJay up this evening, he's grumpy but seems better. Here is what we found out and what I'm curious about. We did x-rays of his entire body and sonograms of his liver and pancreas along with bloodwork, stool samples and just about everything else we could think of.

1. Slightly enlarged liver - Emergency vet thinks this is caused by the diabetes and not Hypatic Lipadosis and that once we get the diabetes under control his liver should calm down.

2. Fluid was found in his abdomen. They went ahead and extracted some and tested it with (THANK GOODNESS) all the tests coming back okay. They think that perhaps all the prodding and poking and medicines have given him a small case of IBD and that it's nothing to worry about.

3. Pancreas enlarged with a mild inflamation - JayJay's diabetes may be caused by a case of chronic pancreaitis so this didn't surprise us and the emergency vet (and our vet!) agrees that it may well calm itself as well once we get his bs under control

4. Kidney's - slightly dialated - They think because he's been trying to regulate his own body through drinking excess water (The symptom that made me get him checked out in the first place!) his kidneys have dialated a bit and that I shouldn't worry about it, they should self correct. (His water intake has gone down to normal already!:) )

5. Blood in his urine - UTI - which they said was normal for a newly diagnosed cat?

So, what they said was that everything wrong is probably subset issues from the diabetes and that I should control it and they'll most likely correct themselves as well. They sent me home with a new anti-biotic for the UTI, medicine for the vomiting, anti- nausea medicine and ten cans of a wet food they want me to feed him for the time being until the IBD has calmed itself.

Tonight he seems like himself more (But not totally) - he's hungry and able to keep stuff down and this weekend (Assuming that my bank account is able to take another hit after the stress of all the vet stuff this week) I'll be getting a home testing kit so that I can monitor him day/night.

Is there anything else I should be doing? It doesn't seem fair that the poor guy has ALL this going on right now and I want to make him as comfortable as I humanly can while he's adjusting and getting so sick. It sucks because before his diagnosis and onset of treatment he wasn't sick at all visably... just drank alot of water and sure did like to eat so I'm feeling completely and absolutely guilty to the tenth degree. Anything I can do for him to make his life easier would make for a much happier me too.

Thanks for letting me vent and for any suggestions you might have for us.

(For added cute factor, here is JayJay looking awfully angry after we picked him up, but awfully adorable with the bandage around his lil leg.)

Oh dear - I'm so sorry for both of you that he had to have an ER stay. He does look very cute with his little red bandage - he should be able to use that to great advantage over the next few days - "fan me please, I'm a little warm", "I'd like a little treat now - here!" You get the picture!

I really only have 2 comments to give you. Insulin needs to be given to cats 2 times a day. They metabolize it twice as fast as people, so once a day just does not work. You can give .5 u in the morning and .5 u at night if your vet wants him to have 1 u per day.

WRT your bank account - if you want to save yourself another ER stay, splurge and spend the $20 at Walmart for the glucometer, strips, lancets, small tube of polysporin ointment with pain relief. This is the best investment that you can make - it will save you many many $$$.

Are you hometesting his bg levels? This is the best, cheapest way to handle diabetes. I agree that it needs to be dosed 2x per day ("bid"). Lantus only keeps blood sugar levels down for about 12 hours. Here is a link to the Lantus sticky: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18139 Have you recently switched food? Some foods really bother kitty tummies. My civie cannot eat beef without barfing it all over! I don't really know anything about anything except diabetes & acromegaly, so I can't tell you if some of those other findings may be causing the nausea. I know others will be along with a lot more information!

Jay Jay is gorgeous!! He must have a lot of girlfriends looking so handsome! ;-)

I'm not hometesting yet, I'm going to buy a test kit tomorrow. He was just diagnosed and started on insulin on Tuesday and by Thursday morning in the hospital so I'm afraid I haven't had time to go to the store and get the stuff. Will do that tomorrow though, most definitely. With all the running and worrying and doing with the sickie, I just haven't had time yet to go. Tomorrow is a day off of work though, so barring anymore trips to the emergency room, I'll be hitting up a Walmart!

hehe, Just-As-Appy - he knows exactly how to bat his lashes to get us to do his bidding! The bandage will just add to the extra charm! We've even been making him his own little bit of boiled chicken in the evenings to snack on. He's got us completely wrapped around his little paw!

And yep, Charliesmeow! All the ladies fawn over him, he's quite spoiled. ;-)

I have switched his food, which, I will be quite honest, I've done several times in the past. JayJay usually just really does not seem to care. He's been like that since he was a baby - as long as he's eating, he's happy! (Which is how he got to 18 pounds originally!) Wet, dry, mixed ... he's never seemed to have a hard time with any of it, he doesn't even bring up hairballs as much as I think he probabaly should and rarely if ever has he thrown up food. We've gone from a dry indoor cat food to a wet cat food, but went to the wet food just before he was diagnosed so he'd already been use to it.

I will definitely talk to the vet about the two times a day. Right now he's on .5 once a day - I don't know if I could manage to get .25 into that shot though, I'm having a rough enough time getting just .5 in! She told me that because she's had such good results with Lantus being an insulin that actually gets cats OFF insulin, she wanted to start him at the lowest dose then raise it as needed.

Should I just not be as worried as I am about the other things then? Since it's the vets opinions that they will more then likely self correct with time?

Lantus is a wonderful insulin and many many cats do go into remission on it. It's awesome that your vet is also starting at a low dose because too many start way too high (especially for big cats) because they think they should dose by weight, which they shouldn't! But twice a day is the recommended dosing strategy for Lantus (and I believe every other insulin commonly prescribed). Just because it metabolizes out of cat's bodies much quicker than it does in a human.

I hope someone else stops by soon to look at those other issues you mentioned.

It's great that you're picking up your hometesting supplies tomorrow! Be sure to ask for any help you need. It may take a while to get the hang of it, and for Jay Jay's ears to learn to bleed for you. It took us about a week. But now it's like nothing at all! Easy peasy!

Our vet did and "up close and personal" with me when she tested his ear to make sure I knew how and what to do but honestly, it made my stomach turn. I'll DO it - no questions asked, because it's helping the lil guy but the thought OF doing it, makes me queasy! Having read this forum so much the past few days I know I'll get use to it but it's going to take a bit of time.

JayJay is not much of a cuddler (He prefers to be a 'hang out buddy' - meaning he loves to be in the same room as everybody, but not so much within arms reach.) he does love to be held like a baby and walked around though the house though and we found some freeze dried squid that he likes so hopefully I can keep his attention away from the ear prick as much as possible (He doesn't seem to even notice the insulin shot at all.)

But I may be back asking advice on sticking too, come tomorrow!

Thats what I call a Satellite cat - always in your orbit!

Meanwhile, breathe. Everything came down on your really fast and you're still absorbing it. Be patient with yourself; as you go over things repeatedly, they'll beging to stick and become second nature for you.

Welcome Rea and JayJay,
It looks like the "greeting committee" has already given you some good information  so all I want to do is pass on one thing that someone pointed me to a couple months ago when I first arrived.

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=33671

Please, before you do anything else, read that. And bookmark it. And when you are feeling lost, confused and overwhelmed (which you will, because all of us feel that way at times), read it again.

Of all the posts and all the threads that I have pored over for weeks, if I had to pick just one, that's it.

Again, welcome, and please feel free to ask anything at any time. From what I've seen, someone else is always here.

Carl and Bob in SC

Carl,

Thank you very much for pointing me to that. I will tell you a not-so-secret... hehe... I found it last night and cried and cried then woke up one of my roommates to read it to them and cried some more because you're absolutely right, that's exactly what's been happening. I feel like I'm in "OHMYGOSHFIXITNOWNOWNOW" over-drive and it's absolutely terrible. JayJay has been looking at me like I've grown another head half the time. I probably need to read it once a day just to help myself keep centered and I know all the "worry-vibes" that I'm putting out are probably stressful on him too. (Although I at least know enough to leave the room if I get too weepy, so he doesn't get even more stressed!)

BJM - Satellite cat! Yes!That's him exactly, always there but never THERE :D

Thanks again, everyone here has been so wonderful and it's just amazing that I've had someplace to go to vent and worry and have other people understand. I know that JayJay and I still have a lot to learn about our new way of life but everyone has been so patient and wonderful, so thank you.

Rea, I just sent out 2 newbie kits yesterday...I thought (for no particular reason that I can think of) that one of them was for you.
If this is so....It only takes 2-3 days max to arrive (barring that darn Sunday!) and if it was you you got 60 strips in there due to the generosity of one of our anonymous members.
Soooooo, if you can hold off do so. Hoping it will arrive Tomorow.
One was to California and one was to Florida...send priority mail/
Best of Luck Rea,
Lori

Hi and welcome

He sure is cute!

I don't have any additional comments to add about what is going on with him. I will point out that I vomited and/or fainted when I was first learning how to give shots and when I was opening up the glucometer box. I was a needle-phobe and it took a while for me to get the hang of everything. Eventually, I mastered the task and have helped several people learn how to give shots, home test and also give fluids. My vets even refer people to me. Who would have thought.....

Some of the best advice that I was given here was to simply "breathe".......

Lori,

That wasn't for us, no... I don't have paypal so as much as I would love the support (giving and receiving!) that knocks us out of that loop, unfortunetly.

HollyandSpader; hehe - I KNOW the feeling! I just teared up while having to give him his oral antibiotics, he hates them so. Giving the shots was not as bad as I thought just because he doesn't seem to notice them at all. I don't know how I'm going to do with the ear prick though. *URK*

Rea and JayJay,

If he is not a holdie kitty, perhaps you could put him on a coffee table with a towel or bathroom counter/floor, your pokey poke supplies, and of course treats...rub those ears, offer that lovin, give those treats, and test be done in minutes....I watched several videos on home testing and I believe there is one or two that show the kitty laying on a towel I think in a bathroom and he is getting boiled chicken during the testing time.... I hold my Bean girl in my lap/special towel, lots of lovin, special treats and a special small wicker basket that holds her supplies in.... that she now recognizes as our 'pokey poke time', and she will go right to the chair.... She is in remission right now...5/24 last shot, but we still do test and she still does know the basket, lovin, treats... And now mommy does not get sick and want to pass out when I do this! thank gosh!
When everyone says, welcome to the dance, they are not kidding and our babies are WORTH EVERY MINUTE! So, welcome to the best place around!
