Hi All just need a bit of advice, I did jaspers curve today. First one I have been able to do due to work commitments. I am going to take this sheet to my vet to ask for lantus, in the meantime is there anything else I can do to keep his levels lower? He is on caninsulin. I noticed when he got to his lowest 8.7, he was miaowing and fidgety is this normal? he does it most days and some nights around the same time, i'm just worried he is in pain? Thanks in advance mel xx
 
Not too bad. The short duration is typical of Cansulin.
I would increase the AM does to 1.6 units. You can easily do that if you use U100 syringes. Just draw the U40 Caninsulin up to the 4 unit marking on the U100 Syringe.
Also, I would do a curve at night since yo have a large difference in Am ( 1 1/2 units) and PM (2 1/2) dose.
 
The vet told me to change how much I give him based on what his level is! he used to be on 5 units twice a day continuous before I started home testing then he had a bad hypo so I started testing and the vet said to vary what insulin I give him and gave me a list of what to give depending on his levels is this correct?
 
An insulin like Caninsulin can have a variable dose based on the preshot BG. However, each cat is different and thus there is no "magic" table of the dose and the dose can change with time.
Since yo are home testing you can use your/Jasper's experience to optimize the dose for Jasper.
 
Many cats go lower overnight.

We suggest new users not shoot below 200 mg/dL on a human glucometer.
The lowest glucose (nadir) after a shot should stay above 50 mg/dL.
For Caninsulin/Vetsulin, you may get 2 nadirs as it is a mix of 2 different duration insulins. Check around +4 and +6 hours after the shot.
 
In addition to the +4 and +6 as recommended by BJ, it's not a bad idea to get some +3 tests in as well. Sometimes the nadir on Caninsulin can be fairly early. It can also get earlier as time goes on.

A good tip for when to test in the early part of the cycle is if you notice a big uptick in appetite and your kitty starts looking for more food. I found with Saoirse that that was when the Caninsulin was really kicking in. Going forward, you can keep an eye out for the uptick and keep a log of how long after injection time it occurs because it can be an indicator that the nadir may be trending to a point earlier in the cycle.
 
I don't understand what your numbers meen what is 200mg/dl and 50mg/dl? sorry I am from the uk and this is all new to me?
 
Hi Mel,

There are two ways of expressing glucose concentration using different units. Americans use mg/dL (milligrammes per decilitre) but internationally mmol/L (millimoles per litre) is used. It's easy to convert one to the other:

>> mg/dL = 18 x mmol/L

>> mmol/L = mg/dL / 18

Therefore 200mg/dL is the equivalent of 11.1 mmol/L and 50mg/dL is the equivalent of 2.8 mmol/L. (Thresholds for use with a human glucometer.)

Numbers vary during each cycle. The nadir is the lowest BG number in the cycle.
