I posted here recently about possibly getting a feeding tube for my FD (remission) kitty Jasper when he and my civvie cat came down with a mysterious GI-type illness that caused them to stop eating for a while.
It is with great sadness and heartache that I must tell you that Jasper passed away suddenly last night. He seemed to be recovering from his GI upset and had regained all his weight back and more. Nothing indicated that he was ill yesterday morning. We just happened to take him back to the vet yesterday for a re-check because he had had a slight touch of suspected pneumonia in one lung 3 weeks ago.
When the vet student took him out of his carrier, I noticed that he was breathing a little heavy and commented on it. When the professor vet came in to examine him, she noticed that his heart had a galloping murmur. They took him for his re-check xrays for the pneumonia. They soon came back and showed us the xrays that showed he was in full congestive heart failure! They immediately had him on oxygen and lasix to help get the fluids out of his lungs.
They had us wait around to see if they could stabilize him enough for us to take home, but sadly he kept on getting worse. Nothing they tried seemed to help. Jasper was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in February which is the most common type of heart disease. At that time, they said it was a very mild form that didn't require treatment or medications yet, just rechecks every 3-6 months. They consulted with the head cardiologist again several times yesterday. Both he and my vet where at a loss as to why or how Jasper had suddenly gotten so ill.
We got to see him one last time before we left for the night. He was in terrible shape, chest heaving, open-mouthed breathing, foaming at the mouth. It was just so hard to see him like that. We couldn't even pet him because they didn't want to open the oxygen door too long. They tried everything they could think of to save him overnight, but we got the call around midnight to tell us he had passed on.
I still am quite numb. It all happened so suddenly, so out of the blue. Jasper has been through a lot in the past six months. Starting with his diabetes diagnosis, the insulin injections, getting poked 2 or more times a day for glucose testing, then slowly getting him into remission. Then there was the cardio testing/diagnosis, a severe asthma attack, some mysterious ataxic episodes that came and went quickly and then the severe gi illness. I just wonder if all those trips to the vet took its toll on his poor little heart.
I will forever miss my Jasper. He was truly the sweetest kitty you would ever want to meet. I will always think back and treasure the extra close bond we had after his FD diagnosis. He took all of what that entails like a champ and still came right back to me for lots of purring and snuggles. He was truly a wonderful and special kitty.
I want to thank everybody who helped me, whether directly or from me reading so many informative threads on this website. I know I couldn't have got through it without all of your help!
